Hey, Hi, Hello
Javert here, I realise I have not been super active as of late, but I will be making an effort to post more soon! -Javert
I'M EXCITED
We open Sweeney Todd tonight in 2 hours & I'm beyond excited. I haven't been in stage in almost a year. Good thoughts/prayers/vibes would be greatly appreciated in behalf of the entire cast! 😁 -Javert
Something I feel needs to be said
So I've been thinking a lot about posts regarding trans people in theatrical and other performance roles, and how people don't feel there's enough representation of them. That, or they feel cis persons are too often cast as trans role. Vice-versa, whatever, you get the idea. Regardless, as someone who is very involved with theatre & acting, I feel that I need to put something out there. This might come as a surprise to many of you out there, but THE WORLD OF THEATRE AND ACTING IS NOT FAIR. Equal representation DOESN'T ALWAYS HAPPEN. Directors play favourites. Less talented people get cast as better roles for the soul reason that they've been involved longer, or maybe they're marginally better looking. (Looking at you Zac Efron, in the first High School Musical) In no way am I saying that this is okay or right, but that is literally how show business works. Also, this isn't ALWAYS the case! The reason so few trans people are in the literal spotlight, is with out a doubt, due to the fact that there is a smaller pool of talent to select from. There's a sea of cis people in audition lines and casting calls, but only a puddle of trans persons in comparison. So of course there are going to be less trans people cast by those statistics! So don't be so up in arms about it, what it's going to take to get more trans people represented in those types of roles will be more trans people getting involved, in general. And as a side note, in my case it's equally as difficult to get a role. I'm a cis female with the Contralto vocal range, meaning I'm essentially a female tenor, that can hit bass notes. And although I'm cis, I have a very masculine stature to me, but a feminine face, yet I still portray a man on stage FAR better than I do a woman. So much so, that of the 5 shows I've done, I have only played a woman in 1 and for 1 scene of another. (In said show, during that scene, someone from the audience asked who the drag queen was on stage.) and in every show I get someone that comes up to me afterwards, that is truly astounded that I'm a woman! You could argue that a guy could have or should have played that part because it's FOR A GUY, But that's why it's called ACTING! If the director feels a woman can play the part of a man better than an actual man, or even a man as a woman, it's entirely their call on that. So, to finish my rant on this matter, everyone needs to calm down a bit about representation in theatrical productions. It's called acting for a reason & we are all just there to play the parts we are given to the best of our abilities. -Javert
Ask Javert!
And I'm travelling again today, so how about another rousing instalment of Ask Javert! -Javert
It's not letting me answer for some reason.
So in response to the anon-question about Musical Theatre: MY FAVOURITE KIND OF QUESTION! :D I like quite a few of them actually....but just to keep it short, my top 5 (excluding Les Misèrables) would have to be: 5.1776- Not entirely accurate historical points in this show, but GOD DO I LOVE WILLIAM DANIELS. I love this show more than I should, for reasons unbeknownst to me, quite honestly. Just a fun show about American history with one of my favourite actors singing and being obnoxious as John Adams. Great show, highly recommend you see it at least once. 4.Wicked- Haven't gotten to see it yet, but I love the books, and the music is one of my favourites also. Something about the colour green is just so appealing... 3.The Lion King- Have gotten the chance to see it on stage twice. Costuming & puppetry are just mesmerising. I adore Elton John, so the music is loved as a given. Would be able to die happy if I could play Zazu on stage. 2.Into The Woods- I actually got to play the part of The Narrator & The Mysterious Man in my senior year of high school in one of the biggest productions our local theatre has ever put on. It was my first "big" role & happened to be my dream role, getting to accomplish that was just fantastic. So many memories tied to this show and it's music... One of the greatest messages and subtexts of any show as well. Absolutely wonderful show. (In addition to anything by Stephen Sondheim for that matter. That man can write a show and make you question your own morals and soul like no other.) 1.The Phantom of The Opera- ADORE the atmosphere, music & story of this show. it was my first musical that got me into enjoying theatre to the degree that I do now. Read the book, seen 4 film versions, and even had the chance to see it on stage in Vegas. And as a fun fact, I've even gotten to know 3 actors who have played the Phantom on Broadway at one point or another. Will always be one of my favourites. Sorry for he long answer, but Musical Theatre is legitimately one of my favourite interests on the face of the planet. -Javert
Dear Javert: Please tell me you saw the Les Mis reaction pics I posted? -Eponine
Ask Javert!
I’m travelling today, and I’m going to be obscenely bored since I’m being forced to be a passenger for 6 hours, rather than drive this time ‘round. So! Let’s have a session of ask Javert! Ask whatever you want & I’ll try to answer best I can. Alrighty, ask away! -Javert
