Mod Lavender: I'd be really interested in reading more a about the role of trans exclusion in the 70s-90s. I agree that lesbian is not defined as a cis woman loving a cis woman. Lesbian is a wonderful, rich identity that shouldn't be reduced to what terfs think it is.

Mod Leigh: From my own exposure to social media, there seems to be a heavy focus on terfs right now within the online queer community. That’s not to say they haven’t always been a problem of course, this is just what’s currently circulating and has been more relevant in the past 3 years or so (this is, perhaps, thanks to a certain UK author?). I’ll admit, I’ve grown a bit frustrated of not being able to have a discussion related to lesbianism without terfs being mentioned, lest we forget that not all terfs are only lesbians or even queer.

Semantics of the term ‘lesbian’ often boil down to petty arguments that I am too old and tired to engage in. But it is essential that we continuously ensure the safety and inclusion of trans/genderqueer folks within queer spaces, especially transwomen and transfems.

my whole life i thought i was straight despite the fact i never felt anything with men. but recently i sat on a girls lap and when i got up i felt super euphoric and weightless like a ghost. could i be gay and just repressing it? never had a physical reaction like that from a man.

We go through our lives experiencing new things constantly and that will never stop throughout our lives. When we feel something new it can be both exciting and scary. I can't answer your question directly, because no one will truly know except you. Take time for self reflection, look to similar experiences that others have had (we have a tag that you can scroll through). Remember, there is no rush to figuring yourself out and nothing is set in stone. I would also like to note that the Q in the acronym not only stands for 'queer' but also 'questioning', which seems to be a process you have only just started. You are welcome here and safe to explore possible identities within the queer community!

It's okay to question your orientation and to change it when you feel that's right.

You're not pathetic. Let yourself experience and feel what you are, and don't judge yourself. There is nothing better or worse about being a lesbian than any other sexuality. All sexualities are equal.

It's understandable to feel "weird" since you've identified a certain way for a long time, and change is confusing sometimes.

There is no shame in who you feel attraction toward! The way you’re feeling now is okay and normal. Take some time to reflect upon yourself. Talk to people who you trust regarding this situation, talk about your experiences/feelings, process it with others who are willing to listen to you. If you feel the identity of ‘lesbian’ no longer fits you, maybe this is an opportunity to explore other parts of the queer community (which sounds p exciting imo). Whether you keep the identity of ‘lesbian’ or decide another word fits you better, no one will think any less of you! To quote my favorite character:

how do I know which mspec identity is me? i feel like some of them fit me, some don't, but I don't know if I care about deciding?

I myself have gone through an entire decade of going from Ace to Sapphic to Queer then to Pan, back to Sapphic and finally at my current label- Lesbian. Even now that identity is subject to change esp with my more recent exploration with gender.

You won't ever really know until you just do, and you don't have to decide unless you want to. Continue to research and learn about different identities, continue to engage with other people in the queer community, and listen to fellow queer voices . If there's a label that never fits you then that's okay. If there are many that fit you, then that's fine too!

Something I think isn't really talked about within the queer community is that- things such as labels aren't necessary in order to be part of the queer community. Labels and identities can certainly help you have a better understanding about yourself and help you connect with people who have similar experiences. But labels are also often made to be these perfect little boxes that we're just supposed to fit into. We're not cats (disappointingly), we can't magically liquify ourselves into the perfect little box all the time. Not just the sapphic community, but the queer community as a whole is this wonderfully messy thing that was never meant to fit into the perfect box in the first place. Some people choose to label themselves and some don't. Keep growing and learning and being your wonderfully messy self, anon!

on that subject, god doesn’t have a gender so nobody can tell you your gender or lack thereof is “wrong”

that whole “god made man in his image, man and woman he created them” bit? obviously if both were created in god’s image, god isn’t one or the other. and fuckin, cmon, who are we as humans to decide what the literal creator of the universe is? did god ever say they were a man? no? spectacular.

here is a link i found with a compilation of verses where god is described much more like a mother, and i especially liked these two:

Deuteronomy 32:18 God who gives birth. “You were unmindful of the Rock that bore you; you forgot the God who gave you birth.”

Isaiah 66:13 God as a comforting mother. God: “As a mother comforts her child, so I will comfort you; you shall be comforted in Jerusalem.”

so from here on out, we use they/them for god in this family. idc what the bajillions of translations of the bible use; god is not a man.

like, real talk, though: the reason jesus came in the form of a man was bc that was how he would be taken at all seriously by anyone. remember when he ~*deigned*~ to speak with women? i really believe that’s like the only reason. jesus was such a feminist. he was pals with the “undesirables” and had compassion and love for them that p much nobody else had.
