what's bad about mogai?
okay so i’m not 100% sure on the other mods opinions but here’s my opinion:
mogai is really… bad. there are like ten billion identities for every single tiny detail of attraction a person can experience. and this would be like…… alright-ish if like a) half of these weren’t reenforcing internalised homophobia, b) heaps of them weren’t turning a mental illness into a sexuality, c) the split attraction model wasn’t a thing,
also, heaps of people end up going through a thing that @hate2breakittoya has an awesome tag for called mogai hell denial. essentially, people try to fit into heaps and heaps of labels for whatever reason, without realising that they could just be a lesbian. or a trans gay person. or an ace pansexual. instead, they end up going through HEAPS of unnecessary labels.
another thing is that mogai lets like… heaps of bad stuff into the community. i don’t want to delve too deep into it because it can be pretty triggering but if you want to look it up check out “clovergender”. sapiosexual is pretty bad too. and obviously turning mental illness into “”identities”” (disassociate-sexual. like..... no.)
personally, i find the split attraction model to be one of the worst parts about mogai – i think i should go through that because…. whoo boy i really really hate it.
essentially, the split attraction model has two major issues:
1. it sexualises the LGBP identities2. it enforces internalised homophobia.
how so, you ask? good question. essentially, implying that someone who is gay is inherently sexual is just… wrong. telling someone that they have to identify as a h*moromantic h*mosexual implies that the latter part of that identity pertains to sex and only to sex. now, if you have any knowledge of the treatment of gay people throughout history, you’ll know that a majority of the rhetoric used against them told them that they were sexual predators – i.e. inherently sexual beings. see why that’s bad? it reinforces this completely false narrative. someone doesn’t have to identify as a biromantic bisexual – if they’re biseuxal, they’re not saying “i want to have sex with multiple genders”. they’re saying “i am attracted to multiple genders”. these are two totally different things.
and onto the second detriment. split attraction model essentially reenforces internalised homophobia in a lot of people who use it. example:
“i’m not gay… i’m a heteroromantic bisexual.”
are you already seeing the problem here??? a girl tells herself that yeah, she could have sex with girls and make out with them but NEVER date them!!! this shouldn’t be classified as some kind of attraction. it’s probably just internalised homophobia manifesting itself as a mogai label. this is MEGA bad for lesbians because they’re already told day in, day out that they are SOMEHOW attracted to men!!! they just need to find the right guy!! etc. etc. etc.
also i can’t speak for the other mods but mogai is like… centre of the inclusionist movement and tbh i don’t think that being ace makes you inherently lgbt. like if you’re a lesbian ace or a trans ace then you’re definitely lgbt but if you’re just a cisgender, non-sga asexual then like… you’re not lgbt.
hope this cleared some stuff up!!!!
