Coyote Kin Food in Quarantine
During this difficult time, it might seem tricky for a coyote to find the foods they might normally prefer. When things are rough in the wild, game and other larger animals can be scarce. However, coyote are as clever as they are tough- as an omnivore, they know of MANY different types of foods they can gather up to keep themselves full, healthy and happy.
Here are some coyote kin options can help bring some comforting kin feels into your life while you’re in quarantine!
Many coyote create small hoards of food when times are tough. Here are some ideas of coyote-approved (or as close as we could find) foods that you could use to create your own mini coyote snack hoard in your den:
Dried Fruit (Things like apples and blueberries are most easy to find, but coyote will also eat pears, persimmons, peaches, cantaloupe and blackberries.)
Carrots/Baby Carrots (just be sure to eat these before they go bad! Alternatively, you can store this one separately in your fridge)
Gummy Insects or Snakes (Insects and snakes are both something coyote will eat when food is scarce, but beside the fact that neither of those things tend to agree with those human bodies we’re all stuck in- or are just really hard to find- you can substitute them for candy in the shape of snakes and varied types of insects!)
Crackers, well packaged bread or other grain-based snack foods (coyote will eat grains while scavenging too, and if the pieces still feel too big and processed you can always break them into smaller pieces to make them feel more like something you might find in the wild!)
Looking for something a little more filling? Coyote scavenge for both prey AND vegetation during times of hardship and will even eat grass! Because of that, it’s healthy for a coyote like you to have a little bit of green in your diet. In that case, you might want to try a few salads (with other coyote approved food included in them!)
- A bowl or plate (Bowls are best to prevent spillage, but whichever feels better to you is what you should use!)
- 2 Cups of your preferred choice for Greens (whatever you prefer to use for a salad, really! Try to find something pre-packaged if you can, since those are likely to be less handled by others)
- 1 Can of Canned Tuna or Canned Chicken
- 1/3 Cup of Green Beans and/or Edamame (Bought frozen and thawed out)
- 1/4 Cup of Carrots (Cut into small, thin circles if fresh, otherwise bought frozen and thawed out)
- 1/4 Cup of Corn (Bought frozen and thawed)
- Dressing if Preferred (we recommend something like extra virgin olive oil or balsamic vinegar/vinaigrette, but definitely experiment and find what fits your tastes best!)
Start by making sure your frozen vegetables are thawed out and your canned tuna/chicken is drained and ready to go.
Then, place your greens inside your bowl. Add in the drained meat, green beans/edamame, carrots and corn.
Drizzle with dressing if you’d like, and toss to mix everything well.
And that’s it! You’re ready to go!
Perhaps you’re in the mood for something a little sweeter? Or, perhaps you don’t like fruit when it’s dried. In that case, you can create another simple recipe!
- Frozen Fruit of your choice (we recommend apples, blueberries, peaches, cantaloupe and pears- fruits coyote are known to eat. But you’re free to find and add whatever fruits you LOVE the most! You can also get fresh fruit, but again, frozen fruit is packaged and less handled by the public, so we’re recommending it in this case)
Thaw out your fruits of choice.
Cut up any fruit that you feel is a bit big, or just leave it as is. Whatever you prefer!
Place the fruit in your bowl.
Add sugar or other sweeteners if you’d like to.
That’s it! You’re ready to dig in!
We hope you stay safe, happy and healthy in quarantine, friend! Remember that as a coyote, your intelligence and ability to adapt will be a HUGE help to you in times like this. The coyote population is high and rising right now, and we FULLY believe you’ll prosper just the same!
