A Statement On the Tumblr Update
Well, y’all, Tumblr certainly is a webbed-site. If you haven’t noticed yet, let us burst your bubble. Staff made an update to how reblogs fundamentally work on Tumblr.
It has always been the case that the originator of a post gets the notes. This functionality is what allows Tumblr’s “Yes and-” culture. You know, the long chains of silly meme worthy posts we all love? It also supports creators, because regardless of how far down the reblog chain you go, OP gets notes for comments on their art and fic.
The new functionality breaks those chains, but it’s less freeing and more letting the posts float away into the sunset while a bunch of tumblr-ites scream “Nooo! Our posts!” Now, you can “like, reblog, or reply to any part of a reblog chain, and that note will go to the reblog’s author.” As in they’re taking OP out of the equation entirely.
In the wise words of Mod Fridurwrites, “this fucking sucks, lmfao”. These changes will fundamentally change how things work on Tumblr, including on this events blog. When Submission Periods for Outer Wilds Events begin, we rely on the old reblog function to let your lovely comments get to the creator of the art and fic.
While there are things we can do on our end to maintain that flow, we’re going to need your help too. When commenting on submissions to our events please be sure to add them to OP’s post and not our own reblog. This ensures the kind words get to the right person!
If you’re as upset about this change as we are and want to do something more, please be sure to tell Staff. The best way to do that is to leave a ticket here . Be sure to describe the issues you have with the latest update and why it runs counter to Tumblr’s culture as a website. You can also comment on their posts on Tumblr, Twitter/X, and Instagram.
Hopefully, Staff will see sense soon and this will all seem like a bad dream. Until then, let them know you don’t like it and be sure to reblog from OP so that they still see their notes!
