What if technological progress is an illusion? What if it leads back not to greater control over the physical environment but to an increasingly unpredictable environment, a return of the repressed capacity for destruction in nature itself? What if the impulse behind technological development (though not necessarily behind the spirit of scientific inquiry) is itself pathological? What if the drive to make ourselves entirely independent of nature, which never succeeds in reaching its goal, originates in the unconscious attempt to restore the illusion of infantile omnipotence?
