Adding to the problem is the shock of discovering that Dean is the little girl’s father – unattached and hotter than ever. Dean’s smile still makes Castiel melt, but Castiel knows that ship has sailed. The fact that Dean seems to be on board this time, however, doesn’t make it any easier for him.

It’s been some time since a destiel fic made me stay up late into the night. Damn, it was hard to put this one down! Every chapter revealed a new twist and I just had to keep reading on. At the very core this is a reunion story about two men who were never together in the first place, yet had a special bond much stronger than either of them suspected. 

The story starts with successful writer Cas returning back to his hometown after years of self imposed exile. Castiel’s reunion with his extended family is wonderfully heartwarming. Meeting his former childhood friend and teenage crush, teacher Dean, is as painful as any of us could imagine. When Cas develops genuine friendship with Dean’s daughter, Gracie, it only adds more confusion to the whole situation. What follows is a dizzying roller coaster of mutual pining, misunderstandings and heartbreaks that I guess it’s good it takes place during Christmas festivities. The small town setting adds much needed fluff and charm to this touching story of second chances. I loved every moment of it! Please be assured that the author sensitively handles the nine year age difference between kid Cas and his older brother Michael’s best friend Dean. In this story, Dean is attracted to Cas as a person, not his gender in general (Dean is not bi). I guess that is the main reason why it took so long for him to understand his feelings for Cas. The author has promised to post Dean POV fic later this year and I’m already excited for it.

Looking For a Sign

Looking for a Sign by emwebb17 Rating: M Word count: 70,200 Summary: Dean can't figure out why the hot guy on the train is ignoring him...that is until he realizes that the man is profoundly deaf. After an unpleasant misunderstanding, the two become friends. It isn't long before Dean wants more, but Castiel sticks steadfastly to his rule about not dating hearing people. When Dean starts to date other people to try to get over him, Castiel starts to wonder if maybe Dean is the exception to the rule.

This fic starts off as a seemingly fluffy romcom type story (and don't get me wrong, it had those amazingly fluffy moments too), but it's quickly apparent that there's so much more to the fic than that. This fic has so much heart to it and that heart added a sweetness to the story that made the slow burn and mutual pining so devastating, but so bearable at the same time. While the fic does have your typical (but delicious!) mutual pining aspect, Dean and Castiel's relationship went so much deeper. There was a certain level of complexity that can sometimes be rare in a fic like this. The reasoning behind Castiel's reluctance to be with Dean was absolutely valid and gave him incredible amounts of depth. And Dean. Poor, sweet Dean. His eagerness to keep Castiel in his life no matter what was so wonderful and so heart wrenching all at once. It added a very lovable aspect to his character that stayed true throughout the entire fic. And the slow burn. Oh my, the slow burn! It was incredibly believable. It flowed well with the story and kept me wanting more until the very last word. And then there was the angst, and the humor, and the pining, and the sexy times. Basically in 70k words the author found a perfect balance for it all and granted us with this beautiful fic.
