Ah, the deep irony of someone who studies historical clothing having no concept of how little most people in the past owned, or how much more we have today because we've found ways to make lots of things cheaply.

Poor people did not own sewing machines when they were new, they were a purchase equivalent to buying a new car! Making cheap sewing machines means casual hobbyists and people who just want to mend clothes can afford them.

The modern cheap plastic sewing machine is frankly a marvel of engineering and we should all be grateful to the scores of forgotten engineers who made it possible.

As a friend said, owning a vintage sewing machine is like owning a vintage car. It's a hobby in its own right. If someone wants a daily driver to commute to work, you should be recommending them something like a gently used Honda Civic, not a 1969 Thunderbird, no matter how much you personally love the Ford Thunderbird.
