i'm begging you, you cannot use "sex positive" to mean "enjoys having sex." sex positivity is a pro-sexual liberation political stance, emphasizing sexual autonomy, and freedom from the stigmatization and criminalization of consensual activities. it is good to be sex positive, and everyone should learn to be sex positive. but YOU DO NOT HAVE TO LIKE SEX TO BE SEX POSITIVE. if some people are saying "everyone should be sex positive, being sex negative is wrong," and some people are also saying "sex positive refers to people who like sex," do you understand how dangerously that muddles the message? it makes it sound like the message is "everyone should have and enjoy sex, and not doing so is wrong." which is actually the complete opposite of promoting sexual autonomy. you can't have sexual liberation if sex is something you HAVE to have to be a good person. i genuinely don't want to go nuclear rage on people for making what's often an innocent mistake, but as a person who is politically sex positive, and personally sex-repulsed/averse, it sounds like you're implying i'm actually sex negative, just for not wanting to have sex personally. people on this godforsaken planet constantly get pressured into sex as is, we can't let "having sex is politically good and saying no to sex is politically regressive" gain any more traction
sex repulsed peopl remember this always
The best way I can describe to an allo person how you feel about sex as a topic as a sex-repulsed or averse asexual is that it feels like a hype that never ends. As though Despicable Me came out and everyone around you was sending minion facebook memes to each other for years to come. The stores are full of minion themed products; they're in ads and your friends talk about them all the time. And deep in your heart you're like "I'm glad that they're able to enjoy something I personally don't like and am not interested in :3". But there is always this little voice in the back of your head that's like "If I have to see ONE MORE of these little yellow FUCKERS today then God help us all." You make an active choice to communicate only the former.
Shoutout to the asexuals who:
do NOT like sex, even with someone you love
will NEVER have sex, not even 'to find out if you enjoy it,' because you don't want to
have NO curiosity about sex and do not write, read, or enjoy smut
are SEX-REPULSED and have to beg your friends to stop talking about their sex lives in graphic detail when you're together
You are not broken, weird, or alien
Your boundaries are real, and valid, and you deserve for them to be respected
You deserve to be both treated and regarded as an Adult by your sex-having peers
If any of your sex-having or sex-wanting peers cannot or will not regard you as an Adult and as a complete person because of your asexuality, your indifference to sex, your revulsion for sex, or your virginity, I need you to know something:
They are in fact the living, breathing proof that having sex does not grant either maturity or a fuller understanding of human nature.
You're okay. I promise.
"i know so many aces who make the best erotic art!!!!!! 😊"
good for them! i'm glad they can express themselves with that kind of art. but do you also support aces who are repulsed by sex? do you support aces who skip past sex scenes because it squicks them out? do you support aces who will express that they dislike certain types of content that you enjoy? do you call repulsed aces "puritans" for simply having a preference?
or do you only support aces who do things that you value? 🤔
and if you are ace yourself.... do you only support aces who are like you? or do you support the entire spectrum?
“asexuals write the best smut lol” so true! quick question btw how do you feel about aces who don’t engage with any of that stuff. like at all.
I do think that the "sex repulsion as dysphoria about being culturally assigned a sexual identity or role that is incongruent with how you see yourself" framework can apply to a lot of other queer experiences besides just my particular brand of asexuality + total sex repulsion, by the way. A gay man who is repulsed by the idea of sex with women is experiencing sex repulsion, even if he doesnt experience it with men. A trans person who is repulsed by the idea of sex pre-transition is experiencing sex repulsion even if they don't experience it after transitioning to their desired comfort level. I think this framework offers a lot of potential for solidarity across queer experiences, without forcing either fully sex-repulsed people or anyone else in the community to compromise on their comfort or boundaries.
Once you start looking at sex repulsion this way, you understand that it's inherently a queer experience, not the conservative puritan bogeyman everyone here seems to think it is. There's not just part of the community that doesn't like sex, and then everyone else who does — there is a whole community of people who can't or don't want to fit in the "one cisgender man and one cisgender woman in a sexual/romantic marriage with children" box, and whose boundaries lie somewhere outside it. No one here has to be anyone's competition. We just need to build a world that's expansive enough that we can all fit.
