I believe that we have reached the point where a willingness to jailbreak your devices, pirate your entertainment, and install ad blockers, VPN's, and browser extensions to circumvent payment requirements wherever possible is no longer about convenience and getting stuff for free. It's about protecting your dignity from a corporate world that refuses to respect it.

Because it gives you the ability to say, "No, I am not going to let you use FOMO to manipulate me me into paying $150 for the full experience of a video game. No, I am not all right with you interrupting a YouTube video mid-sentence with an ad for how great A.I. is. And no, I do not accept that I need to send you my photo ID to protect children in a world where Epstein's associates walk free."

Our corporate, capitalist overlords broke the social contract first. And if they want to be fairly compensated and cooperated with they can either fix that

Every time I log onto this site it feels more and more like a dead wasteland. Like there's so many bots and AI posts that I can't find the people I'm seeking to connect with in my tiny fandom. I hate the current online digital landscape. Where has everyone gone?

It honestly makes me so sad, that tumblr felt like one of the few remaining places you could rely on to find community no matter how small the fandom... but now? It's just as bloated with dead internet white noise as the rest.

I'm losing hope. Where else could I even post my fanfic? AO3 has a lot of issues with bots and theft too. Wattpad is full of AI generated crap.

The internet used to feel like this wonderful thing that helped me to connect to people all over the globe, and now it feels like a depressing dead-zone.

What if one day all of Tumblr’s weird little experiments actually pay off.

Like what if adult content is allowed again, so all the artists come back to Tumblr.

Then all the Twitter and Bluesky leftists realize Tumblr is an extremely leftist platform, so they all come to Tumblr too.

Then TikTok pisses people off again, so all the short format video people come to Tumblr TV.

Then Reddit pulls some shady corporate bullshit again, so all the microforum people come to Tumblr Communities.

And then overnight Tumblr goes from the sad little auto-felicitating has-been site, to the premier conglomerate that owns the modern internet.

Like that’s not gonna happen because Matthew Mullenweg is a little drug addicted piss baby who likes to sexually exploit people more than he likes to run a successful business, but it’d still be monumentally hilarious if Tumblr rose from the ashes like that.

Just feeling a bit hopeless about the state of the internet today

Political reddits are filled with bots and bad faith actors ready with masses of fake accounts to mass-downvote and thus silence actual comments from real people who want to discuss things

They've also infiltrated moderation teams such that comments calling this out can be removed or subject you to a ban for 'critiquing sources/other users'

All of the rules that presupposed every user would be a contributor in good faith are being twisted against us - and yet the majority aren't even saying anything against it because The Rules themselves have been put on a pedestal as sacrosanct - rather than the principles they were meant to represent.

Is this how Jesus felt seeing how people around him deliberately misinterpreted the laws of their society to advance themselves? Feels deeply ironic that those of us raised Christian learnt those stories as children that were meant to be about how the founder of the religion put core principles above all else, and yet so many people grow up to become the villains in those stories.
