Humanity will inevitably have moments where one symptom of a larger problem becomes a focus for many as the other manifestations continue to be largely ignored or overlooked.

In these moments, we should be asking:

1. Does focusing on and trying to address this specific manifestation while ignoring the others get us closer to addressing the underlying problem, or get in the way of it?

2. Can the people focused on the symptom alone be effectively converted into caring about the larger issue, and what is the best way to do so?

In this case, I think the whataboutism around data centers comes from bad faith actors trying to confound and distract in the face of a growing consensus against them, as well as individuals trying to defend their particular use of A.I. as unfairly maligned to protect their egos.
