✿   Homewhat does their home look like; and their bedroom?

Dorian’s own home, as opposed to his family home, is an open-plan loft-style apartment. Bare brick is left exposed on portions of some walls, and the others are painted in warm, matte tones. The floor is hardwood, very old and scarred in places but richly patinaed. He’s a preference for big windows which let in lots of sunlight, and only covers them with thin, translucent white curtains when he needs to block off the view, never anything like those dreadful plastic blinds. Given that it’s open-plan, he uses shoji screens and bookshelves to partition the space into smaller spaces and give the illusion of ‘rooms.’ 

Books and knick-knacks and art are everywhere – many of the paintings, if not all of them, were done by friends of his. The furnishings tend to be older, also, very classic in style and definitely showing that they’ve had previous owners, but in a way which gives them character rather than looking shabby. Mismatched by design, not necessity. Jewel-toned woven rugs soften the wood floor in places, and every chair and sofa is piled with throws and pillows in umber, saffron, vermilion, lapis, cyan, veridian. 

His bedroom is up a short flight of stairs and overlooks the rest of the apartment. All that’s in it is his bed, a small Moroccan brass tray-style folding table, a woven rug in shades of red, and a lot of books.

A black eye, which is brewed coffee with a double shot of espresso. He’d have them add a pump of vanilla syrup, also, just for a touch of sweet to balance all the smoky bitter. He likes dark coffee roasts best, and French roast particularly.

Dorian probably doesn’t game… or doesn’t admit that he does. If asked about it, he’ll scoff and make scathingly mocking references to Tetris and Q*bert, or Angry Birds for a more contemporary pop cultural reference. In reality, extremely immersive lore-heavy RPGs are a secret vice – if Dragon Age existed in this modernverse, he’d play it, and he’d love it. He particularly enjoys all the little logic puzzles built into the games, and reads every word of any codex entry or informational screen. But he’d be very unlikely to admit to his interest, as he’s been made to feel that video games are not an appropriate pursuit for an intellectual sort. 

✎   Books their five favourite books. what type of story do they like?

     American Gods by Neil Gaiman, and he will argue with anyone who dares to claim it’s slow or boring – “It is a clever, insightful deconstruction of the hero’s journey, a modern mythology which layers itself atop the historical base, revealing the relevancy of ancient folklore and trope to contemporary society and the importance of storytelling in human culture!”

     The Silmarillion by J.R.R. Tolkien. Specifically this one, and far less so Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit. Tolkien’s attempt to write a ‘mythic history’ and his attention to linguistic detail, including the way in which his writing style consciously mimics and includes elements of the Old English poetry and Eddas which inspired him, has never yet been bettered or bested.

     The Canterbury Tales by Geoffrey Chaucer, read only in the original Middle English and never in modern ‘poetic’ translation. He will laugh and explain that Chaucer was, if nothing else, a nerd, and that there are so many references and jokes and clever little things buried in the Tales that it becomes almost a treasure-hunt to read. Every time, he finds something new.

     The Republic by Plato. Yes, it’s a bit naive at times. Yes, some of his ideas are impractical at best. But it’s hard not to find the idea of striving for one’s best self to be an inspiring one, the thought that humanity can be better than it is, given only the chance.

     The Complete Works of Shakespeare. Anti-Stratfordians can kiss Dorian’s ass. ‘Nuff said.

Dorian also has a soft spot for very pulpy science fiction and horror. H.P. Lovecraft’s stories are a secret vice – over written, overwrought, straight-out racist at times, and yet somehow so ridiculously entertaining for all their many flaws. He’s also a big fan of the John Carter of Mars series by Edgar Rice Burroughs, for much the same reason and with much the same caveats. 

But generally, historical fiction, or fiction which plays with or somehow inverts or modernizes very old familiar tropes is favorite. Nonfiction to do with ancient history, narrative theory, cultural anthropology, and mythology or folklore. Classics, also; Dorian has a quite nice collection of vintage Modern Library editions of the western canon; one of his favorites is the Latin Poets volume. He’ll haunt any and every used and rare bookstore he passes, looking for them.

((Random road trip au headcanon - Revka forgets to pack pajamas of any sort and kicks herself about it for the first few days. After day three she takes to raiding one of the guy's bags for a t-shirt and carries on doing so over the course of the rest of the trip. Considering how tiny she is compared to all the rest of the group, their things end up as perfect over-sized night shirts on her.))

[So eventually she has managed to acquire at least half of everyone else’s packed wardrobe as her sleep wear and by the end of the trip the guys are down to wearing the same two shirts each, alternating. And are very grumpy indeed about the whole thing!

I hope you know that I can now perfectly imagine modern!Dorian being talked into dressing up as Jack for a halloween party.

What do you mean, ‘talked into?’ It’d probably be his idea! A costume where he can swagger around swigging from a bottle and being sassy all night? And he’d just wear all his own rings for it, too.

{ more headcanons! this time re: modernverse

guess who's immortal?

I suppose that at this point he is the only person who was ever in a proper Brotherhood of Assassins { or well was very closely affiliated with one } instead of the hush-hush nature of the contemporary Brotherhood.

He changes aliases every so often, but always European in nationality { mostly French or Italian }. He moved to the States because staying in Italy, while nostalgic, was proving too be too painful with each passing decade. He instead visits every death anniversary of a close friend.

He moved to Canada on a whim, before he could form too deep an attachment to any one place like he had done with Italy; he regrets this somewhat.

Currently he lives in Toronto and moves every so often between the different districts, his favourite being Little Italy { naturally }. Money isn't really an issue for him, he has a very good team of brokers under his employ. 

He likes to adopt dogs, always in pairs.

He travels frequently between northern states and Toronto and Montreal.
