"We need to talk," she murmurs after a week's worth of silence in bed, and he thinks her voice doesn't sound any less grating after all--he dreamed it would be, maybe, a welcome contrast from the memory of halls and halls and halls of solitary loneliness. Her angles press into his lines and she holds him round the waist like they haven't been lover-substitutes for a while now.

He clears his throat, shakes messy blond curls away from a childlike face, and answers curtly no.

The wan smile, tired and faint as she presses her thin lips against his ear. He dreads her next words. "It's about him, I know you know, but I'm getting tired of being quiet. Can't we remember him in words at least?"

"You talk too much as it is," he replies, but winces. Why can't she just fill the night with meaningless chatter like the women he sees on the television? The anger is rising in him like a water to the boil, like it always does. "Can't we leave it alone?"

This time she says no, her lips pursing like she's just taken another smoke, and her arms tighten around him like she's trying to keep him from running away. "You always do this, Marion; you cover up what makes you sad. We're the only ones who remember him--he sacrificed himself for both of us, and now we have nothing to fight over--"

"God!" Cheeks ruddy with emotion, a fist punching through his new stomach.

"--Just please, listen. We both have the same aims. We need to talk and get it all out before we explode--"

"I'm leaving," he grits out, and digs his nails into the backs of her hands so fast and hard that she yelps to take them back. The sheets are stifling and he claws them away as he gets up, feet dragging as he realizes she's looking at him like she did so many weeks ago, when she found the book that said he was never real.

There will be another week of silence before he returns to the bed again, and when she presses her lips to his ear for the second time he'll pretend like he's fallen asleep.
