Chapter One || Two ||
It was a Friday night and somehow I was dragged to our usual pub again. Within the first 5 minutes, my best friend Allison left to go be with her boyfriend. It wasn't that I minded them being together, but I wasn't particularly fond of being the third wheel.
"Would you like your usual Mary?" I was brought out of my bored stare as the bar tender asked me if I wanted something to drink. We were regulars here and our small town didn't leave room for strangers. I nodded with a small smile and waited for him to pour me a glass of water. I wasn't one to be drinking on Friday nights because I had an early shift on Saturday mornings at work.
"Thanks Jason. Take it easy tonight." I got up from the bar and went to the normal booth that my friends usually occupied. It had been the same booth that we sat at every weekend for the past 3 years since we've been in college so I was really surprised when there was just a guy sitting there with a black hood covering his hair. He must have had a death wish because Allison's boyfriend never let anyone besides us sit in that booth. Everyone in the town had known that since our first weekend here. I turned back to Jason to see if I could get any information out of him.
"Jason what's with the kid sitting in our booth?" I didn't mean to get an angry tone but it was Friday night and I would like nothing more than to just sit down and relax. He looked around at my words as if to make sure no one was listening before he said anything.
"I'm not sure who he is but he has been in here for an hour now sitting there. Sean went to tell him to get up but he must be one terrifying dude because Sean went running with his tail between his legs. I think they just are sitting at a different table tonight." Jason's words were in a whisper and they sunk in pretty deep. If Allison's boyfriend couldn't get this kid to move, he must be something special. I decided that I could at least try and convince him to move to a new seat so I made my way back to the booth.
My heels made a clacking sound on the hardwood floors as I made my way to the stranger in our booth. His back was to me but I could tell he was waiting for my arrival. I slid down to the seat across from him and took in what I could. His black jacket was covering most of his upper body but his face was barely visible.
It wasn't until a few seconds later when he looked up from his drink that I really got to see what he looked like. I couldn't help but let out a little gasp as I took in his features; there was no denying that he was gorgeous. His eyes were a mix between green and blue making them easily contrast his dark clothes. They looked like they had mystery and tiredness behind them – the dark bruise under his left eye didn't help anything. He was extremely pale for it being the beginning of June so I'm guessing he was just a shut in. His hair was sticking up in every direction like he had just rolled out of bed. It's hard to decide if it was naturally like that or not due to the lack of hair gel but it was obviously dyed because no one's had hair was that damaged and no one had naturally fire red hair.
"Why are you sitting at our table?" He seemed unaffected at my approach so I just decided to be straight forward with him. He brought his lip ring in between his teeth and I would be lying if I didn't think that it was the most attractive thing about him. He gave off a very intimidating feel about him and I started getting more nervous the longer he looked at me.
"I don't think that's any of your business Princess." His voice was deep and there was a hint of an Australian accent to it. Why he would travel all the way from Australia to our small town of Portland, Oregon was beyond me.
"Well I think it is my business when you come waltzing in here and take the spot my friends and I have been sitting in for the past 3 years." All sense of fear was leaving as anger was replacing it. He had a cocky smirk and he was being nothing but a pain in the ass. He mumbled something under his breath and I just looked at him with an even harsher stare in hopes of him repeating it. He eventually sighed and answered me.
"I know you guys always sit here and that's why I'm sitting here now Princess." I hated how he patronized me and treated me like a child. My name was not princess and I preferred not to be called that seeing as I'm not 3 anymore.
"I have a name and it isn't Princess. If you could ever so kindly just move to any of the other open booths that would make me very happy." My sass has reached a high along with my patience. I really didn't care who he was or why he was here but I just really wanted him to leave.
"What's your name then Princess?" He rested his elbows across the table and leaned in closer to me. I caught a whiff of his cologne and I could sense the smell of alcohol and cigarettes there too. It was definitely not a combination on someone to whom I would give my name to.
"What's your name?" When he didn't answer I smirked and continued. "My name doesn't matter. I didn't come here to flirt with some guy who is in my seat now would you please move?" I was regretting the decision to only drink water because I could sure use a glass of vodka at this point. I didn't care to be putting up with annoying people after my classes all day.
"I'll move but know this, I'm not going anywhere. Hope you enjoy the rest of your night," He pushed his glass away from himself up from the booth. He pulled his hood up higher before walking past me and towards the exit. I thought he was gone until I had felt his breath lingering by the back of my head. "By the way Mary, you should really make sure you know who you're associating yourself with. I'm only here to protect you."
'What?" By the time my mind processed his words, he was on his way out the door. He bumped into Sean who was standing by the door on a phone call and I can tell their exchange wasn't the most pleasant one. If looks could kill, that mystery man would be dead ten times over. I looked away for a second before looking back. I caught him in time to see that he winked at me just before the door closed in front of him. Who even winks at people anymore? My mind was still in a complete jumble even when Allison and Sean joined me again.
'What the hell was that Mary? What did you even say to him to make him leave?" Allison's voice rung through my ears but I could only sit here in silence. I have no clue what he meant when he said he was only trying to protect me because I think the worst thing I have ever done was drink underage. I'm pretty sure everyone goes through those stupid teenage years.
"He seemed like a dick. I didn't like him." I looked over to Sean and saw that he had a pissed off look on his face too. It seemed like the two knew each other and they were like arch enemies or something. Whatever happened between them was something and I wanted to know what it was.
"He was something. What did he say to you?" I put extra emphasis on the word you to make sure that Sean knew I saw them. I brought my almost empty glass to my lips and finished off the last of my water before setting my glass down and focusing on Sean.
"I'm not sure. He just cussed at me a bit and then left." He looked anywhere but at me and I knew that it was his tell-tale sign that he was lying. This whole night had been very uncomfortable and just plain weird for me. I just wanted to go home and forget about all of this and the mystery guy who was sitting in our booth.
"Well whatever he was doing here doesn't matter. I hope you didn't tell him anything Mary." Allison had such a stern voice as she said that and it caused my eyebrows to shoot up in a questioning way.
"And why not?" I said right back.
"I don't know but he gives me the creeps. It's not wise to let someone like that know your name. You might just end up in a ditch for all I know." I scoffed at her remark but slightly agreed with her. He was not someone I want to be seeing in the future.
"I'm just gonna head home. I'll see you guys later." I didn't even give them a chance to respond before getting up and making my way to the exit.
Today had taken a weird turn of events and I'm just counting the minutes until it was over. Running into that guy made my head dizzy and numb; his words never leaving my mind. No matter what he said, I will not be running into him anytime soon again.
