The current flag of Lesotho was adopted in 2006. The flag was adopted to celebrate the nation’s 40th anniversary. The new design was intended to convey that Lesotho is at peace both internally and with neighbor, South Africa, which Lesotho is located entirely within. The Blue represents the sky and rain, the green prosperity, and the white peace. At the center of the flag is a mokorotlo (a Basotho hat), which replaced the old emblem, a collection of weaponry. This change is to further emphasize the nation's peace. A brown hat was originally proposed, but this was changed to black to represent that Lesotho is a black nation.
