Hutt River never expected to see his fellow micro nation standing on Australian soil. He blinked a few times just to make sure that he wasn’t seeing things. Once he had reassured himself that yes, Molassia really was standing a few feet away, he went to investigate.
Molassia looked up when he approached. He seemed relieved to see Hutt River, for a flicker of a second. But then he was just as calm as usual, hidden behind those dark sunglasses of his. “Sup.”
The Australian micro nation just frowned at him. “Why are you here?”
“Hey, there’s no need to be rude! And after I traveled all this way to see you…”
Was he sulking? “Me? Why me?” he asked, very confused by now.
“I wanted to give you a little something.”
Hutt River stared at him suspiciously. “…And that is?” he asked cautiously.
Molassia rolled his eyes behind his dark sunglasses. “God, you’re so uptight.” He sighed, as though slightly depressed. It didn’t seem like him at all. “You don’t trust me at all, do you?”
“You’ve never given me any reason to trust you.”
He shrugged. “Fair enough.”
“So what did you want to give–”
“Here. Catch.”
Hutt Rivers reached out an caught the tiny projectile. It was smaller than the palm of his hand. “…What’s this?”
“Like I said, I wanted to give you something.”
“… Why?”
Molassia frowned at him. “Well today’s your birthday, isn’t it?”
Hutt River blinked. “You… knew about that?”
“Obviously. Why else would I be giving you a present? Idiot.”
He scowled for a moment at the insult, but then turned his attention to the gift, He unwrapped it slowly. Wrapping paper littered the ground by the time he finally reached the small cardboard box. Hutt River hesitated for a moment, then finally opened it.
“Well?!” Molassia demanded, a bit impatiently.
Hutt River just stared at the present inside the box for a moment. Then, out of the blue, he began to laugh.
Molassia flinched. “Wh-What?! What’s so funny?!”
Hutt River just continued to chuckle. “God Molassia… you’re so American.”
“What’s that supposed to mean?!” he demanded, immediately defensive.
In response, Hutt River just lifted the gift out of the box by its gold chain. He dangled it in the air for a moment, turning to Molassia and arching an eyebrow. “A kangaroo charm? Seriously?”
“Kangaroos live in Australia!” Molassia defended. “And besides, it’s cute!”
He kept his eyebrow arched. “So basically… you think I’m cute?”
Molassia blushed and looked away. “N-No. Of course not.”
Hutt River chuckled. He returned the gift to its box, and then walked over to the red-faced micro nation. Leaned in close. Kissed him lightly on the cheek. “I love it,” he murmured, smiling slightly. “Thank you.”
Molassia glanced sideways, seeming surprised. “R-Really?”
He nodded. “You’re right. It’s adorable.”
“I told you!” Molassia crowed triumphantly.
Hutt River laughed again.
“What?”
“You’re totally blushing.”
Molassia’s blush deepened. “N-No I’m not!” he stammered. Knowing that he wasn’t the least bit believable, he turned and hurried away.
Hutt River watched him go. After a moment, he turned his attention back to the box in his hands. He smiled slightly.
'What a guy...'
