Molly and Sirius' relationship developed slowly, gradually. The long hours they spent together in Grimmauld Place were, at first, torture for them both. Arthur was away at work, Molly busied herself tending to the state of the place, cleaning, cooking. Sirius had no choice, he was caged here as he was not permitted to show his face in public, being a convicted murderer and all. The icy tension between them grew, as awkward silences rent their days. The few times they spoke, it was to argue over who was better fit to take care of Harry. "You aren't even able to leave here! " Molly shouted one particular morning, after Sirius had incited another fight. "How can you say you are best fit to look after him? James and Lily may have named you his guardian, but parenting is a lot more than prodding him to break rules and get into mischief. Don't think i don't know what you and James were like as teenagers." Sirius scowled, feeling defeated. It was true he and his fellow marauders had had their share of detentions and broken countless rules. But he believed himself to be a changed stallion. "Molly" he said slowly, his voice cracking with emotion, "13 years in Azkaban changes a pony. True when i got out i went a little nuts but you can't blame me. Locked away in... That place... Innocent..." his voice trailed off and he wiped a single tear that had spilled over onto his cheek. Molly's expression softened. This stallion, this prankster, somepony she had always thought of as childish and immature, letting his guard slip? No, it couldn't be. She gave him a sympathetic look, but with the lump that was forming in her throat, she didn't trust herself to speak and instead turned away to set the dishes to washing themselves. A few mornings later, a similar scenario played out. Molly was tidying up after breakfast, Sirius trodded sleepily down and sat at the table, opening the Daily Prophet to yet another article smearing Dumbledore, using Harry as an example of his daftness. Sirius slammed the paper down, with more force than he had intended, rattling the cups and saucers still on the table. Molly turned to see what the commotion was, and seeing Sirius, frowned slightly. She wasn't in the mood for his irritability today. Arthur had informed her that he had to leave town for business; he would be gone a week. Scowling at Sirius, she sighed. "What is it, another wanted poster?" Sirius didn't even notice the contempt in her voice, only replied weakly. "Molly, you should have a look at this." He picked the paper up once again, handing it out for her. Drying her hooves on her apron, she strode over to him, and took the paper from him outstretched hoof. Looking down at it, she felt her heart drop into her stomach as her eyes scanned the title. "Albus Dumbledore, Legend or Liar?" She felt a tear well up in her eye, and let it fall unchecked as she noticed the accompanying photo. Dumbledore and Harry, struggling to hide their faces surrounded by reporters thrusting quills at them. Sirius rose slowly to a stand as he watched the hot tears flow freely down her worn face. His heart ached for everything she must be feeling. She had suffered so much; from worrying about her sons that had already left hogwarts, to the four foals she had still attending, to her dear Harry and Hermione whom she also had come to love as her own. Sirius stepped toward her slowly, praying his actions wouldn't be misinterpreted as malicious, then realizing they had gone unnoticed. Molly stood there frozen, feeling defeated, as though in some way she was to blame for the public atrocity some rubbish author had had the audacity to write. Her heart shattered in a million pieces, her mind racing, her emotions overriding all of her senses. Sirius moved closer, his heart crushed seeing her in this state. Molly, strong, warm, caring, nurturing Molly was breaking down before his eyes and he longed to comfort her, to relieve her pain, to carry her burden as his own. Molly stood there, numb, frozen, all of her energy poured into not completely breaking down. She didn't even notice Sirius inching towards her until she felt his warm, strong arms wrap her in a hug. Slowly lifting the paper from her weakening grasp, he set it down on the table and turned her towards him, enveloping her in a loving embrace. She didn't fight it, but welcomed his touch, releasing any ill feelings she had towards him, immersing herself in him. Her tears splashed onto his bare chest, and he let them fall, reaching a hoof up to pull her face into his chest, softly stroking her ginger hair, feeling tears of his own threaten to spill over. They stood there for a long moment, him just holding her, keeping her together, offering his strength for her to take it as her own. Slowly she returned the embrace, and felt him begin to shake under her touch as he started to be overcome by emotion. His sobs wracked through his body, and she tightened her arms around him. Holding each other, they stayed, both crying for each other and for a love they shared. Sirius leaned his head down, resting his cheek atop her sweet smelling hair, breathing her scent in, an aroma that had always reminded him of the only place he had ever felt safe and secure. As his thoughts drifted to James, he couldn't help but realize how much he'd lost in the last how many years. And now he had Harry, the one who was most like his former best friend, the one who needed caretaking, loving, guidance. In that instant, he realized that all these long months, Molly had been right about one thing. He wasn't the one best fit to care for the young colt. At least, not alone. He would need help. He would need Molly. He lifted his face slightly, brushing the top of her head with his lips in the smallest of kisses, a large part of him hoping she wouldn't notice. She tilted her head towards his, her eyes red and puffy, but no longer carrying the hatred and contempt they had for so long. In place of the emotions he usually found in her eyes when she looked at him, this time he found nothing but love, trust, compassion, forgiveness. He couldn't bear it. Every moment he had spent wrecking havoc, creating mayhem, causing hell for students and professors alike flooded his memories and he felt consumed by guilt and remorse. How could he have been so cruel? He thought of poor Severus Snape, how he had taunted and tortured him as a colt. All of his former professors whom he had disrespected and mocked. The humiliated faces of all his fellow students he had played practical jokes on flashed through is head one by one. It was too much to take in and he stumbled, almost losing his balance. Molly steadied him, her expression becoming worried. "Sirius, what is it?" he looked into her eyes, past all the hurt and the pain of all she had been through, deep into her soul where he found a strong, caring, nurturing mare wanting nothing more than to be reassured that everything would be okay, that her family and everything she held dear would make it through the hay they were faced with. Staring into his eyes she was suprised to find a stallion with a broken soul begginguen forgiveness, redemption. Their lips brushed gently, for the briefest of moments, and a crackle of electricity raged between them, compelling their emotions to snap into overdrive and before either of them knew it, a force of passion had consumed them both. Lips parted, teeth nipped, hooves caressed both soft and rough. Their bodies melded frantically, as though time had quickened to a double tapping beat. The temperature in the air rose at their cores met, teasing, pleasing, wanting, needing, begging for more. Then it was over and time stood still, their hearts beating in their ears the only audible sound. They stayed that way for a while, the sands of an hourglass slowly slipping by, neither wanting to return to the worlds they had known before. Sirius held her, just held her, until both their heartbeats had slowed to a regular pace
