Theories about Molly

I have a theory, a game theory if you will.

I don't believe that Molly's husband is the sole reason she distrusts and has a hatred for men.

I believe that it started with other men in her life. Even though he was never mentioned, I believe it might have started with her father, and possibly even Father Thomas.

Firstly, I believe her father was of a similar strain as her husband. If her husband was the only singular man she had known that couldn't be trusted and had burned her, she most likely wouldn't have had such a bad outlook on marriage unless she had seen it work poorly for multiple people, such as her mother and father.

Her and her mother were probably getting WWE'd by her father, and that planted the seed of distrust and hatred. However. It had yet to bloom.

Still being young (molly seems like she was pretty young when she married, probably early 20's) she tries to escape her father by marrying a different man hoping that it would turn out differently

(Also holy shit in that picture her husband seems a lot older than her, there is no way in hell that man was also in his 20's or even 30's)

Things however, get significantly worse. Molly is getting emotionally, mentally, and not even probably she was definitely getting her ass beat by that piece of shit.

Molly starts to hate men, considering that she doesn't have many good examples, but being still young, wants to hold out hope that they aren't all like that.

She goes to Father Thomas for help, as he seems to have been a trusted member of the Pleasant Valley community for a very long time.

However, Father Thomas is Catholic. He encourages her to stay and work it out. Considering that Catholics don't believe in divorce, and she most likely would not be eligible for an annulment, she was encouraged to stay.

Over the years she grows bitter. Pleasant valley has people in it. And I highly doubt it was a secret that Molly was being poorly treated. What makes me think that is when Molly mentions the rotary phone.

Astrid asks if there is anyone they can call for help, and Molly says-

"No one that would help if you asked for it."

I think a lot of people took that as a possible link between Molly and Jeremiah, but I'm pretty sure he doesn't have a Rotary phone. On a lesser level, it could be taken as no neighboring homesteads or farms willing to share supplies in the winter. While I think it's also true that no one would help in terms of food or wood, I believe it's also a call to the fact that Molly probably asked others for help out of her marriage many times. She was most likely ignored by the people of pleasant valley, which fed her hatred of men even more.

Molly even talked about wanting to kill her husband numerous times because of how much she hated him. She probably felt so trapped that there was no other way out for her but his death.

Even then, she mentioned that she never had the strength to do it.

Of course we know nothing about Molly before the aurora and the Collapse, but in her picture (the only glimpse we have into her past) she comes off as...meek. A very far cry from the emotionally unpredictable woman we see in game.

Now that her husband was dead, I believe something in her snapped. It seems that her husband was attacked by wolves shortly after the Aurora, and she simply froze up and didn't shoot. But now that he was dead... She had a strength she didn't have before, a new outlook on life. She was a free woman now, and she never wanted another man to put her or any other woman in that position.

So she started to hunt the Blackrockies. Molly associates them with her husband, cruel men who derive enjoyment from the pain of those they considered weaker than them.

However, if anything, her new activities are more self destructive than anything. She's clearly a deeply traumatized woman and mentally unstable woman. She risks her life in order to enact justice she never got, but doesn't seem to be in a healthy state of mind at all.
