Morgan desperately tried to cool off her of cherry red face as she and Everett conversed with each other. They neared the Social Studies classroom when they heard Cissa yelling at them from down the hallway.
“EMO BOY! MOLPHIN! STOP FLIRTING WITH EACH OTHER AND GET BOTH YOUR ASSES INTO SOCIAL STUDIES.”
Everett and Morgan both glanced at each other and blushed. As Morgan walked into the classroom she noticed that there fellow peers were lined up against the back wall. Morgan stood by her friend Caitlin and bent down to whisper to her.
“What’s going on?” Morgan asked.
“We’re switching seats. Maybe you and Everett will sit next to each other.”
Morgan glared at her friend. Caitlin made an air heart with her hands before whispering.
Morgan smacked her on the back of her head. Caitlin kicked Morgan in the shins, and Morgan had to hold back a yelp of pain when Caitlin did so. Mr. Kennedy stood up in front of the room and began to tell everybody their new seats.
“Somebody skipped leg day again.” Caitlin muttered. Morgan choked down a laugh at that comment. Mr. Kennedy pointed at the last two seats in the back of the classroom.
“Everett and Morgan will sit there.”
Caitlin whistled lowly after he announced that. “There are many things you could do back there without anybody else noticing.” She remarked. Morgan suddenly felt the need to cry. Her friends kept saying that her and Everett were the perfect match, but Morgan truly doesn’t see it.
Morgan dropped her bag beside her desk and slunk into her chair. Everett glanced over at her before facing the front of the room. As Mr. Kennedy began his social studies lecture, Morgan fell asleep.
Morgan awoke to the sound of Mr. Kennedy screaming detention. ‘Who the fuck made him that angry?’ She thought. She listed her head to see Mr. Kennedy’s finger pointing towards the back of the classroom, right at Everett.
No, no, no, no, no! This couldn’t be happening. If he got detention then-. The realization dawned on Morgan. If he got detention then that meant they have to go to detention together after school! As she heard the bell ring; she quickly packed up her bag and attempted to put on a calm demeanor as she walked out the door.
Morgan was so proud of herself. She successfully avoided Everett all day today. She found an excuse to get out of the situation any time he attempted to talk to her.
Her stomach dropped as the final bell of the day rung. She was dreading sharing detention with him. She couldn’t get out of this. Her head hung low as she trudged along the hallway. Students all around her were whooping with joy since they got to leave school. They didn’t have to be in a room with there arch nemesis.
Morgan didn’t understand why her face heated up and why there were butterflies fluttering around in her stomach as she neared the detention room. She knew for a fact she didn’t like him, in fact, she absolutely positively despised him. So why won’t the butterflies in her stomach cease? Her hands started shaking as she opened the door to the detention room. She scoffed and scolded herself quietly. ‘Get a grip.’ She thought.
Her efforts were rendered useless as her face turned an even brighter red and the butterflies best their wings even faster. Her hands began to sweat, so she wiped them across her black leggings quickly. Of course, it’s just her luck that not a single other kid got detention today. Only Everett and another teacher accompanied her in the room.
“Take a seat.” The unknown teacher said. He sounded miserable. Though it was to be expected, who wanted to stay at a school for longer than they should? The chair squeaked as she pulled it out from under the desk. Her face turned bright red from embarrassment. All eyes were on her as she took her seat. The teacher took a deep breathe and explained the rules for detention in a very bland voice.
”Do your work quietly, if you don’t you have to restart your detention another day. If you talk you get a warning, three warnings and you get kicked out and restart your detention another day. I’m going to get something quickly, both of you, behave yourselves.”
Morgan and Everett both nodded and unison as the teacher left the room. The door slammed shut and they both heard the click of the lock. Morgan opened her computer to start her work. She turned her head briefly to see Everett just sitting there and staring intently at her. Morgan opened her mouth to say something but quickly snapped it shut and looked at her computer. He wasn’t worth her time.
Everett on the other hand, was noticing things about Morgan he had never noticed before. He noticed the way her eyebrows slightly furrowed every time she was angry or annoyed. He noticed that she rarely wore any jewelry unless it was the occasional silver bracelet. He noticed how she was always make-up free and how she always wore athletic wear. She rarely wore jeans, and she occasionally straightens her hair, but he always preferred it when it was in her natural curly form. He noticed how her eyes lit up whenever she spoke about soccer or Tom Holland.
He could never understand her obsession with Tom Holland. He always believed Tom Holland was overrated and ugly.
He noticed countless other things about her. If he told his friends about this, they would surely tease him about falling in love with her. He wasn’t in love with her. It was just a crush. His feelings would pass.
Morgan could still feel eyes burning into the side of her head. She whipped her head around to tell him to knock it off, but the words died in her thought as she stared at him. The small sliver of sunlight shining through the window made his earthy brown eyes light up with flecks of gold. His brown curls got even more messy as he ran his fingers through his hair.
Morgan looked down at at her hands and began fiddling with her fingers to look inconspicuous. She let her hair tumble to the side of her head, so she could hide her blush. Everett noticed this and slightly smirked. He knew that she was in denial. He saw her blushing when she dropped her books. He moved out of his desk and walked over to the unoccupied seat beside Morgan.
Morgan moved her hair so if covered her face even more than it did before. Everett smiled at her shyness and picked up his hand. He slowly inches his hand closer to her face, and he moved her hair away from her face and back behind her shoulder. Everett opened his mouth to say something before the door slammed opened and the teacher stepped back into the room.
”Everett, get out. Come back for detention again tomorrow.”
Everett slowly stood up, staring at Morgan the entire time. He grabbed his backpack before walking out the door, never breaking eye contact with Morgan once.
Morgan and the unknown teacher sat in uncomfortable silence for what seemed like eternity, when in fact, it was only fifteen minutes. The ringing of the phone broke the unbearable silence. Morgan sighed in relief as he picked up the phone.
The teacher went silent to let whoever called him talk.
Morgans heart began to race. Who was calling? What happened? Why do they need her? Her left foot began to bounce in anticipation.
”Yes, I’ll let her know.”
The teacher hung up the phone, and turned to face Morgan. Morgan’s breathe caught in her throat as she heard the next words that came out of the teachers mouth.
”You’re needed at the police station.”
