Immersed in the Langa Astigiana among the gullies, ravines, gorges and fortresses, Mombaldone is the only village that is still surrounded by the original walls that haven't changed the housing structure since it was founded. Geographically, Mombaldone is in the Bormida di Spigno valley, but the area around it is rather similar to that of Denice, Montechiaro d'Acqui or Turpino – all located in the Alessandria province – than to the towns in the Asti province. Strolling through its only central street that forks off into alleys, passages, archivolts and courtyards, I felt as though I was taking a trip down memory lane. I suppose Mombaldone has that special, magical effect on any first-time or regular visitor. Who wouldn't want to live in an original stone house by a charming, historical square? Italy's been hit hard by the #coronavirus outbreak, which is partly justified although there's massive #misinformation out there. At the end of the day, #lifegoeson ! Now back to the blog. Earlier this morning I was in the ghost village of Mombaldone, a small medieval jewel of the Middle Ages. It's actually the only village of the 'Langhe Astigiana' (the hilly area in the province of Asti famous for its wines and cheeses) still surrounded by its original walls. Hence, perhaps, why it's declared one of "Italy's prettiest villages". When I was walking down the only main road in Mombaldone, I really felt I was taking a trip back in time. The dry stone walls are absolutely impressive and I could tell much has been done to keep the houses, arches and passageways as they are and to prevent the village falling into a state of neglect. Mombaldone is surprisingly easy to get to thanks to the Alessandria–Savona and Acqui Terme–Savona train lines.
