Transparency. My youngest son has been dropping the ball on homework. I took away all of his electronics and privileges. Still no change. So I asked him if he missed me, because I been going super hard on my careers and haven’t been home as much. He said he missed me a lot. So I asked him if we could make a deal- I wouldn’t work the hospital at all in November and I would spend more time with him, just us. He liked that idea. My other children are big and have their own agendas. They’re so much older than him, he’s often an after thought in their teen and adult lives (he’s 10). If I’m honest, I often feel like I’m a horrible mother because I’ve been after the bag and serving the community so hard, I miss the signs. But it just a part of motherhood. My son has never complained. I pulled a couple cards on myself, Salamanders and eight of seas. Salamanders signify a person in their 40’s in a military or paramilitary career, who fights for what’s right, is rational, realistic and has a strong will. This card provides courage, bravery, drive and justice. All the things I need more than I innately have (and I have a large amount of those attribute) to do the things I’m doing. But not of those things are more important to me than being a good mother. So since he was a baby, I never miss Halloween with him, and yesterday was no different. We always match our costumes. This year we were Spider-Man versions of ourselves. He said that I was kind of like Spider-Man, because I’m a hero. I said “son, Mommy is not a hero.” He replied “But you are to me.” That gave me both hope that I am a good mom and anxiety that I could fail as a mom. I got one chance per child at this mom shit. My other children get it now that they’re older... and they adore me for it. Gotta do it right for this one too... or at least give it a good old college try. I’m so in love with my YGs, shawty. I wanna be and give them the world. Some will tell you I give them too much, they and don’t do enough to earn what they’re given. Be ready to catch the fade if you’re slick at the mouth.
