Monells
I'm in Nashville for the weekend. Yesterday we ate with strangers at Monell's, and I recorded excerpts from THE JOB OF THE WASP onto an acetate record at Third Man Records. Got to see the back offices too, where they do the live shows/recordings and were lacing up some boxing gloves for a Friday bout.
Day 1: London > NY > Nashville
A smooth trip from London to Nashville today, via NY’s JFK. I seem to have threaded the needle between last weeks nor’easter and this week’s weather madness. Very lucky.
Here’s a shot of NY harbour from the flight to Nashville, shortly after takeoff.
Got to the hotel in Nashville about 6p, just in time to freshen up and head to the Germantown neighbourhood for dinner at Monell’s.
Monell’s is an old house on a residential street in Germantown. Apparently, it used to cater to the mill workers who populated the area. It does family style cooking, and invites guests to sit together around a big table. Everything is homemade, and the rotating menu is different every day. There’s no booze, so it’s iced tea or lemonade. But the food is so good, you won’t miss the booze.
Cold dishes are left on the table to start. Meat and sides are delivered later, along with biscuits and cornbread. Our menu included: fried chicken, pot roast, lasagne, mashed potatoes, green beans, stewed white beans, corn pudding, cole slaw, broccoli salad, biscuits, and cornbread. Served with sausage gravy and peach preserves. Dessert was homemade banana pudding. The whole meal was amazing, and really felt like genuine home cooking.
We were seated with a couple of kids from Vanderbilt, who could’t have been nicer. It was great to hear their tips about Nashville, too.
Monell’s was a great way to start the trip, and sets the bar very high for all of the meals and experiences that are yet to come.
Priorities. 😂😂😂 #monells #bestchickenever #bananapudding #happywifehappylife (at Monell's At The Manor)
