Repost from @frontlinemedics • Race, upon construction was, and still is, designed as a hierarchical social ranking system. #WhiteScientism #antiBlackness #Caucasoid #Mongaloid #Negroid . Reposted from @science.sam ⏩ Swipe & go watch Dorothy Roberts’ TED MED talk from 2015, “the problem with race-based medicine.” . We still need to study how race influences health, but through the lens of how access to health is racialized — how racism has created health disparities. . What we need to 🛑STOP🛑 doing is using broad race categories based off an arbitrary combination of physical attributes for genetic studies. Ancestral analyses make a lot more sense if you really wanna understand how human variations have accumulated over years and years and years of evolution. . If you want an example of what that looks like in practise, check out my good friend @shawnhercules’ latest post on his work on triple negative breast cancer in Black women of African ancestry. . @hood_biologist also summarized it all perfectly (and was my introduction to Dorothy Roberts): . “What we call racial health disparities are better understood as racist health disparities. RACISM, the political practice of racializing humans is the risk factor, not “race”.” . Let’s do better as we move towards a future of precision medicine. When you’re designing human research studies, participating in them, or reading about them — make sure race is being used as the social variable it is. . Geography
My whole geography class made me question my identity for a solid 10 minutes. We were talking about how being caucasian is due to location and that there are caucasians in South Asia and I was just kinda like - wait what? caucasians go all the way to asia?.... so I had to go look it up
I like that my closest friends have hardly anything I common with me, I really hate people like me. I am an absolute mongette. Although I do want someone to go to great gigs to :(
