Heh. I'm not a Bond fan at all (I've only watched Skyfall, and that only to have the background to read 00Q fics), and I swear I thought Trevelyan was a shared OC of yours and your friends'! Um, that said, what should I know about the character, as you write him? (I have read the Wikipedia article on Goldeneye, but that doesn't go into the history between him and Bond much, which of course is important to fic.) I know, I should watch the film, but until then...????

Alec's an interesting one. I wrote a bit about him here.

Honestly, I wish I'd named Alec anything else, because the Alec in my stories has only the sketchiest relation to the Alec Trevelyan in Goldeneye. I managed to watch the first couple of minutes of Goldeneye, and I actually hated it.

I grew up reading Fleming's stories and watching the classic Bond movies. I stopped right around the Timothy Dalton era, when the movies just got (in my opinion) stupid. I didn't even see Craig's Casino Royale or Quantum of Writer's Strike in theaters. The only reason I watched them at all was because I saw gifsets of Bond and Q at the National Gallery, and I was instantly taken with the fic potential for both 00Q and Bondlock.

As for what to know about Alec:

He's one of Bond's closest, oldest friends.

His designation is 006 (unless it's a non-MI6 AU).

Where Bond is unfailingly loyal to England, Alec is unfailingly loyal to Bond.

Alec is rougher around the edges, more casual, more irreverent than Bond.

He has certain mannerisms that characterize him -- his habit of combining a statement and a question ("He's serious. Is he serious?") is just one.

Like Bond, his parents are dead, most often victims of a murder/suicide. "Trevelyan" is a Cornish surname. In my headcanon, his father was British, while his mother was Austrian. (In Goldeneye, he was involved in the repatriation of the Cossacks after WWII.)

I think that's about it. Really, he's an almost completely original character. I hope you enjoy his appearances! :)

Tiltedsyllogism asked about the same issue: "Oh, I’m so torn. I think you’re spot-on in your read here… but it felt a little too steeped in schtick to me, all the same (Lestrade’s faceplant didn’t help). How about you? Is there a gap for you between what they aimed for and what they achieved?"

I have to say, I think they achieved exactly what they aimed for, if I'm correct about the aim: like many tidbits of this kind, it was more of an advertisement, more a long trailer than a short episode, or webisode. The latter tend to fill in parts of the story that can make a material difference to how one experiences the main plot (I'm thinking of the Battlestar Galactica webisodes that ended up making a discrete story arc). But just as the Sherlock runners don't get the potential of John's blog (which is pretty much a waste of bandwidth imho), I don't think they fully appreciate how webisodes can work in giving the show not just more detail, but more depth. This was more just a bit of backstory, like a nice fanfic maybe.

So yes, it was a trailer more than a mini-episode. A witty, clever, very fun commercial. Definitely an appetizer, meant to whet the appetite without satisfying the actual hunger. I myself wasn't expecting any more, so I think it was just fine.

If you go here you can click "Find A Venue" and find the one you want but I think the Downtown Independent is the only one showing it in SoCal.  I suggest you follow Sherlockology and NTLive on the tweets or tumblr as well, they are real good about announcing cool stuff like this.

Yeah, but see, everyone is just saying "nearby", I want specifics man.  I'm strategic, I need to plan things out and hit points as I go lol and I suppose but LA is a pretty big place...you never know ;)
