The name Stargazer lilies is incredibly revealing; it implies a shoegaze component with dreaminess and a little ‘space cadet’ personality. It also alludes to femininity, but this floral, day dreamy facet to the Stargazer’s is a front; deep down they’re heavy, grungy, and not interested in your ideas about what their name means, or how feminine they are.  Isn’t it already a well-known fact that day dreaming is good for the soul & creativity?  I think stargazing may be even better.  Check them out with Dead Leaf Echo at Mongaze on October 21st.  8 PM / $7 / 21+

If Best Coast was a boy from New York (and inherently so a bit more jaded) this might be what he would sound like.  While Violent Past is a full-fledged iteration of its title, it still maintains an essence of light.  It’s not totally desolate, and the sound, while at times as bleak as the words, has a hint of hope.  It’s that hope amidst a beautifully tainted swirl of lo-fi instrumentation that makes Violent Past such an interesting act.  Playing at this month’s Mongaze, August 5th at 8 PM.  Tickets $7.

With hi fi guitars and lo-fi vocals, Butter The Children have a distinct post-punk sound that would be the perfect soundtrack to an emotionally wrought, existential road trip in a smoked filled car.  They’re playful enough at times to bring to mind CSS, while still maintaining aloofness throughout.  It’s a shoegaze conundrum, and one that translates perfectly to the stage as an approachable performance for a diverse base of music fans.  Don’t miss Butter The Children at this month’s Mongaze, August 5th at 8 PM.  Get your tickets here, $7.
