HAPPY BIRTHDAY LUFFY 🎂
luffy and reader with a queer, platonic relationship headcanons
What would it be like to have a queer, platonic relationship with Luffy?
pairing: ace!monkey d luffy x ace!platonic!reader
cw: none
a/n: this was written with an aro/ace reader in mind, but i did leave in a joke/comment about a lesbian reader. so, just whatever. we vibin. happy pride! lol. based on this request.

Monkey D Luffy is aromantic and asexual, idgaf. Argue with the wall.
Luffy is 100% someone who just cannot be bothered with sex or romantic relationships. His friendships are important to him, and that's enough. Anything else is just beyond his comprehension. Just being there for people, sharing a meal with people, and laughing with people is all he needs. Everything else will just get in the way of his dreams of being King of the Pirates.
Luffy gets along with almost everyone, but I think he'd get along particularly well with someone like him. So, I think when he becomes friends with you, who is also queer, things just click because it's just so easy to get along with people who experience the world similarly to you. I think Luffy would especially get along with other aro/ace people because you're both just chillin' with being friends and exploring the world.
"Oh, you're like me!" Luffy grins from ear to ear.
"Guess so," you laugh.
And that's that.
Alternatively, however, I don't think that Luffy knows or cares about labels. He might be aro/ace, but he does not care enough to define his lack of attraction. If you care about labels, he will 100% respect them, but I don't think he'll hardly even remember the terms if you offer them ("This is my friend! She's lebanese!" "Lesbian, Luffy."). And a discussion of such labels would likely end up in this scenario:
"Oh, so you're ace," you say.
"No, I'm Luffy. Ace is my brother," Luffy replies, looking at you like you've grown a second head.
Y'all's friendship only gets stronger when you're in situations where other people are swooning over romance and whatnot because what's so the big deal about all that?
The Straw Hat Pirates had just successfully defeated another no-good pirate crew who had been terrorizing an island. Thus, a banquet was to be had, and many of the Strawhats had had a bit too much to drink, Sanji being one of them. So, of course, Sanji in all of his drunken glory has been loudly lamenting his singleness to the crew, nearly whining about not having a lady. The crew, of course, has various reactions: Zoro has several mean quips to throw at Sanji, Robin listens intently with a quiet and amused smile, Nami tells him to get over it with a blow to the head, etc. You and Luffy, however, only make a face at Sanji before turning to each other.
"What's the big deal with having a girlfriend?" You ask. "I don't get it."
"Me neither. Are you going to eat that?" Luffy replies, pointing at your food.
I think sometimes when the crew is out and about, people might try to hit on you, despite your disinterest. I think this is where Luffy comes in.
"Hey, Y/N! Who's your friend?" Luffy asks, throwing a rubbery arm around your shoulders.
"Oh, they're not," you reply.
The person hitting on you pulls a face. "Hey, buddy. We were having a conversation!"
"Oh! Was it interesting?!" Luffy grins.
"Not really," you say, amused.
"Well, that's boring! Let's go do something fun!"
And the two of you leave the person alone and confused.
All in all, I think Luffy would get along with a queer friend really well, and I think it'd be a bonding thing initially that just ends up not mattering at all. Luffy's just Luffy, and you're just you, and you're both friends.
