Seeking More Fresh Air Outside (Capitol Reef National Park) by Mark Stevens Via Flickr: While walking around Panorama Point and a view looking to the east across the varying desert landscape in this portion of Capitol Reef National Park. My thinking in composing this image was to use a portion of high ground that I was walking upon and angle my Nikon SLR camera slightly downward to create more of a sweeping view across the setting leading up to the cliffs and monocline off in the distance. The blue skies and clouds would be that color contrast to complement the earth-tones in the lower portion of the image.

Echoes in the Landscape Echo Cliffs, Navajo Nation Traveling along our way across the earth as though following the sound of ethereal echoes to navigate the night sea…eyes closed, correcting course with each interpretation of shifting Doppler wave, each whispered word of calling on the wind.

My Time for a Getaway in Capitol Reef National Park by Mark Stevens Via Flickr: While walking the Chimney Rock Trail with a view looking to the west while on a morning hike in Capitol Reef National Park. My thinking in composing this image was to use the high ground I was on and capture a view looking across the varied terrain to the cliff walls and monocline of the Waterpocket Fold. The blue skies and clouds would be that color contrast to complement the earth-tones in the lower portion of the image.

Now This is a Way to to Start a Hike! (Capitol Reef National Park) by Mark Stevens Via Flickr: I'd seen the Moon earlier that morning before entering the national park but never had an idea it would follow me in the morning skies that day or the others during that October trip across Utah. This was right after starting the hike and walk to Hickman Bridge not long after sunrise. But with sunrise, I'd find that added difficulty in metering this image properly. I could see the area off in the distance with the sunrise just over the taller peaks around me and that sliver of brighter colors and lights. Nearby me were areas more in shadows...all in all what appeared to be a large dynamic range. So I metered a few spots to get a best average for a shutter speed. I then used Active D-Lighting and some control and color control points in Capture NX2 to bring out the final image. A bracketed exposure with HDR might have brought a better exposed image across all colors and tones with this setting, well...I was playing around with different techniques, using in-camera HDR, HDR and then a single exposure RAW image to see what I got. This is a single exposure RAW image.
