Monochrome Week 2019 Days 6 + 7: Wings AU

A/N: This is a combination of the day 6 and 7 prompts because I couldn’t think of anything for Wings. Includes Elderburn mention

“Winter, I’m heading to class!” exclaimed Weiss as she hurriedly put on her shoes and rushed out the mansion’s door. She cursed the existence of the snooze button for the umpteenth time that day. She didn’t want to be tardy, as it was the beginning of a new semester of her sophomore year in college.

She passed by the familiar sight of her sister’s girlfriend walking up the driveway, the blonde’s golden wings stretching out behind her. Weiss gave a small wave before dashing to her car. Closing her eyes, she allowed her vision to recover from the brightness of Yang’s wings.

Ever since she discovered that she had the sole ability to see the wings of everyone she met, she learned to adjust her lifestyle accordingly with tiny changes and new habits. She opened her eyes and started her car, heading to school. In her haste, she forgot to check for traffic.

Even though Beacon University wasn’t very far from the mansion, she decided that going a little over the speed limit wouldn’t be too terrible of a decision. She tried her best to avoid staring at anyone else in their vehicles, another habit she had to quickly add following her revelation. Unfortunately, this gave her limited visibility to the surroundings of her own vehicle.

As she neared the school, she thought she caught a glimpse of an unfamiliar presence in her peripheral vision. She immediately dismissed the thought, knowing that everybody had wings even if they weren’t aware of it. Brief as the distraction was, it still prevented her from seeing the car headed straight for her, causing both drivers to quickly swerve away from each other and stop several feet apart.

Fortunately for them, the street was empty. Trying to calm her racing heart, Weiss took the chance to analyze her surroundings and spotted the other driver hastily jogging over to check on her. She blinked. Blinked again. She wasn’t imagining this; the Faunus woman truly did not have-

“Are you okay?” Weiss looked up into concerned amber eyes, and her breath caught for multiple reasons. Stubbornly ignoring the blush threatening to overtake her face, she refused to meet the woman’s gaze and looked behind her instead.

Expecting to see the familiar sight of wings, she was shocked to find a set of discolored stumps instead. She only realized that she was staring when the Faunus shifted slightly, unsure of whether she should move closer or not. Weiss tore her gaze away and cleared her throat.

“Yes, I’m fine, thank you for asking. I assume you are as well…?” Weiss trailed off hesitantly, unsure of how to process the turn of events and her own internal shock. The other woman gave a small smile and nodded.

“I think we were both in a rush to get to class. I didn’t get enough sleep last night, so-”

“Wait, what time is it?!” Weiss questioned. Her punctuality was something she prided herself in, and she would be quite upset if-

Beep.

Weiss’ watch, set to the time that her class began, signaled the end of her record of arriving to class early. The ex-heiress groaned and rested her forehead on the steering wheel. Of all the ways to start the semester, she thought.

Not wanting to humiliate herself any further, she looked back at the perplexed Faunus staring back at her. The woman’s ears flicked nervously in a way that Weiss could only describe as adorable. Weiss’ mind finally caught up to what was said before her interruption.

Seeing as she couldn’t change anything about her tardiness now, Weiss decided to make the most of her situation. After all, she was always taught that first impressions mattered. Weiss extended her hand.

“I’m Weiss. Do you also attend Beacon University?” She hoped that the question would prevent the woman from thinking further on her name, especially with how the Schnees were portrayed in the media.

Shaking herself out of her surprise, the woman took her hand and gave a smirk. “I’m Blake. To answer your pop quiz, I am a student there too and pleased to make your acquaintance.” Weiss blinked as Blake gave a small bow, that infuriating smirk remaining on her face.

She knows something, Weiss thought, narrowing her eyes. “You’ve seen what the papers have had to say of me, but I’m sure there are ways that I can still surprise you.” Not anticipating that response, Blake leaned against Weiss’ car to bide herself time for her reply. “Is this your way of asking me-” her question was cut short as a car passed by and honked at them, the driver offering an obscene gesture at the women.

The two glared after the car, and Weiss took the lull in conversation to calm her racing heart again. She wondered what the end of Blake’s question was and quickly pushed the thought of a date out of her mind. They had just met, and surely she wouldn’t be that lucky.

However, she was still curious about Blake, the impressions that the other woman had of her, and the stumps in place of wings on her. She pondered how to continue speaking to her without seeming invasive but couldn’t come up with anything. Sighing, she pulled out her schedule and saw that she had several hours until her next class.

Blake glanced at Weiss’ schedule and saw that they shared a class that started in several hours. Blake inwardly smirked at the opportunity this gave her. Time to see if anything that Yang has said about her is true, she thought.

“We should probably get out of the street before anyone else starts cursing us out,” Blake offered, quickly turning her head to hide her smile at Weiss’ scoff. Before parting ways, they exchanged numbers and promised to meet up again before class.

This was certain to be an interesting semester.

Monochrome Week 2019 Day Five: Role Swap

A/N: This is late cause I wasn’t feeling well, but hopefully the length makes up for it. Set in an AU where weapons exist but semblances don’t

Kali Belladonna resisted the urge to roll her eyes upon seeing her husband and daughter training yet again. She knew how much Ghira fretted over their daughter's safety, but to Kali, Blake was still a young woman who needed to take breaks. She leaned against the door and decided to give them a few more minutes before making her presence known.

It wasn't as if they needed to train excessively, she mused. After the Great War, Menagerie had established itself as Remnant's most formidable kingdom and elevated the Belladonna name to its famed status it was known for now. As for Blake, the mage was already proving to be quite intelligent and capable, if her assistance in the war didn't already showcase her potential.

For the past five years, their family attempted to negotiate peace between the remaining Remnant kingdoms. Alas, old prejudices made it difficult for any concrete agreement to be reached, especially with the inferiority that various human leaders felt under Faunus presently. Thus far, they only had alliances with Vale and Vacuo and even managed to stockpile supplies with the latter should the need arise.

Kali wanted to believe that peace could truly spread across Remnant, but it was getting increasingly harder with recent rumors of insurrection and the previous month's break in at Vacuo. Fortunately, the only loss suffered was a train car full of potion ingredients stolen. The only clue discovered was a strand of white hair, which motivated Blake to train harder in order to capture the perpetrator.

Sparks of light magic caused Kali to return her attention to her family. Father and daughter were both breathing heavily, having just finished another spar. Kali decided to make her presence known before they passed out from exhaustion.

“I’m so glad I can finally spend some time with my family because there’s certainly no way that any more training is happening today,” Kali stated sternly, making sure to keep her gaze locked onto Ghira. She smirked as Ghira gulped imperceptibly and turned to glance at Blake, who quickly bit back her objection before steadying her resolve.

“Mom, I’ve almost mastered the new spell that we’ve been working on-” Kali held up a hand to stop Blake’s objections. She knew her daughter’s light magic was improving by the day, but Kali wasn’t having it. Huffing, Blake walked off.

Blake made her way across the courtyard her parents had built for training. She didn’t want to stop yet, especially since she was so close to gaining another spell to use. Sighing, she resolved to take advantage of the break before an unfamiliar noise near the entrance made her pause. Her ears perked up, and she made a sweep of her surroundings. She didn’t notice anything amiss, so she turned to her magic to double check.

Closing her eyes, she focused her aura and allowed it to guide her search. With her magic, she was able to ‘see’ the environment along with all the individuals present within. The familiarity of her home seemed the same as always except for the presence of a dark aura hiding behind a tree.

Opening her eyes, Blake considered her next actions. Sensing that she hadn’t been suspected yet, she was currently at an advantage. However, knowing how talk of rebellion had been increasing lately, she knew that the upper hand she held now wouldn’t last long.

Immediately knowing her cover would be blown, she unsheathed Gambol Shroud and quickly infused her light magic with her weapon. As she did so, she heard a swear and the unmistakable sound of a weapon being drawn and the crackle associated with dark magic. Blake turned to meet her assailant, their weapons clashing, causing a black and white spark to release as their magic mingled and knocking them away from each other.

Since Faunus were faster than humans, Blake recovered first and took the opportunity to give a hasty once-over of her opponent. Two details stuck out to her instantly: she was fighting a human who wielded a rapier, and that human had a familiar shade of white hair. Suddenly, she had more motivation to stop the mysterious snowy-haired beauty. Blinking, she chastised herself. That wasn’t what was important now.

Gripping Gambol Shroud tighter, she watched as the other mage got back up. She could practically see the calculations running through the woman’s mind. Preparing herself to either retaliate or chase her, she readied her stance.

Instead of striking with her blade, the attacker surprised Blake by casting a spell to disarm her instead. Expecting the woman to quickly strike following her ploy, the Faunus concentrated on channeling her light magic but was astonished when her foe threw aside her sword to fight with her magic instead. It seemed that this woman wanted a fair fight, which was something she wouldn’t have expected from her knowledge of Vacuo’s heist and the supposed involvement of her adversary.

“Are you going to drain away the essence of these trees to strengthen yourself now?” Blake couldn’t keep the resentment out of her voice as she recalled the various rumors she had heard about dark magic users. She noticed the other woman’s eyebrows furrowed in confusion, but Blake refused to fall for another trick.

The white-haired woman shook her head as if to clear it of confusing thoughts. Readying her own magic, she met Blake’s eyes with a sharp gaze. “This was supposed to be a reconnaissance mission. It doesn’t have to end in bloodshed.”

Blake scoffed. As if a person who had the ability to remove life’s essence would be anything but violent. She decided that if her enemy wasn’t going to make the first move, then she would take advantage of the standstill.

Wanting to test her opponent, she channeled a tiny spark of magic and aimed it at the woman’s feet. The woman was more graceful than she expected, easily dodging the blast and retaliating with one of her own. Fortunately for Blake, she wasn’t exhausted enough that she couldn’t hold on her own.

The two mages exchanged blows back and forth for a while before one strike from them clashed and caused a fire to ignite in the middle of the courtyard. Shocked, they both paused their duel and began to think of ways to stoke the flames. When they simultaneously opened their mouths to object to the other woman’s interference, the fire began to spread quicker. Reaching a silent temporary truce, their priorities shifted to putting out the fire.

Weiss began to draw out essence from the fire, giving Blake ample time to channel her light magic and evaporate the flames. This process took quite a bit of time considering how much the fire had already spread, but they eventually managed to restore the land to how it originally was. When they had finished, they were both spent.

They held gazes and came to a realization. If they could accomplish this working together, what more could they do if they continued to cooperate? Perhaps they weren’t so different after all.

A/N: This ended up being much longer than anticipated and sets up for a potential continuation, but I'm not sure if I'm going to do so yet. Tell me what thoughts you may have, and thanks for reading!

For Day 8, Free Day, of #Monochromeweek19: Just something I wrote up of what I want to see for future volumes + a little self-indulgence with those two lovely girls. :3c

I hope I do you all some justice with this. <3

“Do you have any idea how long we’ve been searching for you? Twelve Hours. That means I’ve had twelve hours to think about this. And in that twelve hours I’ve decided…”

She held her breath. As if fate had decided it was her last one.

“I don’t care.”

Blake opened her eyes, the incident had been almost a long and forgotten one - but her dreams were a constant reminder that you couldn’t always kill the past.

That forgiveness was a choice.

She gently rubbed away her own sleepiness and looked upon the rest of her teammates. Weiss. They were in Atlas now, Weiss’s own home turf.

And possibly Weiss’s own personal living nightmare. But she wasn’t alone in that feeling. Weiss felt as if she didn’t belong here while Blake herself knew she didn’t belong here. It seemed as if Atlas was nothing but a nightmare to the both of them.

The two of them had been through hell and back in their own personal ways. She just hoped that together they could overcome this.

Jacques Schnee. A name that should’ve soured their taste buds a lot sooner than coming to Atlas. The man who not only defined spite and hatred, but lived it as well.

Along with hearing the things he had done was one thing, but seeing them as Blake and Weiss had was a different story.

“This is Mantle?” Blake stared in awe. Crowds of faunus were making their way through the streets, but not one seemed to have any sort of cleanliness about them. It reeked of sulfur, trash, and every thing that could ever rot.

Not every place around Mantle has been equal, sure there were nicer spots but that didn’t rid the streets of the smells or of the poor and mistreated faunus that roamed the streets.

Blake felt sick to her stomach. While Weiss had looked no better.

The two, the night before had made a promise to one another. To understand where each of the other was coming from. Weiss had accepted Blake and Blake had accepted Weiss, but there was something much more meaningful behind the need for acceptance.

To them, there was an equal need to learn and know about what really goes on behind closed doors.

Weiss took a step forward as the two began walking together through the streets, Weiss sticking more closely to Blake. “I...I didn’t really expect this. They had never let me down here and I had no reason to come down here and…” she stopped speaking as she seemed to watched a group of Faunus being corralled in by Atlas officials. Who were doing a lot more than just corralling them in.

Blake’s ears lowered, she didn’t need context and she didn’t need any other reason to just jump in. With a few quick jumps she stood in between the personnel and the faunus.

“What the…?” the Atlas official seemed to raise his weapon to Blake’s sudden entrance. “Well what do we have here, a fresh faunus face ripe for the pickings. Little girl, do you really want to be made an example of?” the Atlas official kept his gun raised, as did the five others who were with him did.

“You’re beating these faunus up for what reasons?” Blake growled, her hands raised to her back ready to strike and pull out Gambol Shroud if need be.

Weiss silently stood behind the squad, but she was there strategically - as her and Blake made constant eye contact - making sure they had been on the same page if things went awry.

The main officer laughed, “Do we need a reason to beat up worthless shitheads like you?”

“Truth be told, there was no right answer here.” Once more, Blake looked at Weiss and nodded.

Within an instant, Weiss created a time dilation gylph underneath Blake’s feet and soon enough she shot off towards the squad who had begun to fire at her, with Gambol Shroud already unsheathed she struck the bullets away and with her hastened self she went around tripping the soldiers and knocking their weapons out of their hands. Weiss followed through with an ice freezing glyph, locking the soldiers into place.

Weiss joined Blake as the stood over the fallen soldiers. “W-Weiss Schnee… and a faunus?”

“Her name is Blake Belladonna. Remember that name.” Weiss sneered, crossing her arms.

Blake looked over at Weiss and gave her a small smile. Time and time again, Weiss had proved to be defiance. Rebelliousness. Going against the odds. Something that the two shared.

The name Schnee had usually turned heads, and this time was no different. Soon enough, the streets around them had been filled with curious faunus. Some angry, some stunned, but most just curious.

A Schnee was here?

“The Faunus Girl and a Schnee!”

“A Schnee? Hold her hostage!”

“Belladonna? Isn’t that one of the White Fang’s former leaders?”

“A Belladonna and a Schnee working together?!”

Voices through the crowds could be heard, but it was hard to make heads or tails of this situation. Sure, the two girls had just attacked military personnel - and were now known by name.

Oops.

Being a “hero” sometimes meant breaking the law. Or attacking the world’s strongest military. Either way, it didn’t matter to the two. What’s done is done and pushing their way out of this crowd seemed unlikely.

“Weiss… ?” Blake seemed a little concerned as it felt as if they were in a zombie apocalypse about to be surrounded by hoards of faunus.

Weiss stuck Myrtenaster into the ground and summoned the Queen Lancer. The crowd seemed to slightly disperse as Weiss grabbed Blake’s hand and dragged her onto the Lancer. Making a tight getaway as they did.

Blake seemed to have her arms wrapped around Weiss, as she held on for dear life as they sped away. The two flew up towards the island of Atlas as the Lancer begun to slow down.

“Blake, I am so sorry. I didn’t think it was this bad. How could I have been so blind all of these years? And I… I think I knew, I just didn’t believe it.” Weiss began, she still faced forwards refusing to look Blake in the eye.

“Weiss, it’s okay. Back when you had found out I was a faunus and blamed the White Fang, I had thought the same thing… how could the White Fang be working with a human? What were their plans? I refused to believe it at first until I saw it. Things change Weiss, people do. I do you. And you have changed most of all. But working with humans is the change the faunus need. And not one that goes destroying everything in their path, but one that can challenge all of us into working together.” Blake wrapped herself tightly against Weiss, giving her a hug from behind.

Weiss let out a weak chuckle, “Blake, that doesn’t excuse what we’ve done to you. That doesn’t excuse any of this bullshit.”

Blake sighed, “You’re right. It doesn’t. But the sooner we can put this all behind us and strive for the change we want to see then the sooner we no longer let this division hold us. Weiss, you and I can be that change.” she paused, “We’re living proof that a Schnee and a Belladonna can work together. So don’t let the past define you. Because for as long as I’ve known you, it hasn’t.”

Weiss weakly nodded as the two seemed to head over the ridge of Atlas and towards the Schnee mansion. “We’ll make it better. Together.” she finally nodded, breaking the slow minutes of silence.

But as she arrived, she seemed to be greeted by her own father - and her own father's armed guards.

“What’s the meaning of this?” Weiss asked, as her and Blake unmounted the Lancer.

Jacques and his hired forces now surrounded the girls. This seemed to be a common thing in Atlas now-a-days. “You are no longer welcome here. We do not allow your kind in here, especially.” he seemed to eye the two girls, specifically Blake.

“Her kind?” Weiss stepped up towards her father with a growl, “You can’t treat her like that. Like she’s something other than a deserving person, a faunus, who deserves nothing but the utmost respect.”

Jacques seemed to groan, “Whatever you say, will not change my mind. I make the rules of this house and you Weiss, are no longer a Schnee. Making friends with the enemy? With the help?”

Blake’s ears lowered, not out of fear but out of disgust.

Just as Blake had found no reason to not jump in, now it was Weiss’s turn. Once more she turned to her summoning glyphs, now summoning a hoard of white grimm.

The hired guards seemed to panic, looking all around them unsure of whether to shoot or not. Jacques seemed to hold himself together quite well, but his own will was faltering.

“You don’t get to define the Schnee name anymore.” she pointed Myrtenaster at him. “A boy, a liar, and a weakling like you don’t get to tell me what I’m worth. What we’re worth. I am Weiss Schnee. I am more than just a name. I. am. defiance.”

“And you will remember that name.” Blake stepped up, adding in. “For this won’t be the end of it.”

“Because this is only the beginning.” Weiss finished.

They hadn’t killed Jacques. Though they were awfully close to it. But Blake knew it was Weiss’s own decision to follow through and she didn’t pressure that. Weiss had gotten what she had needed from the mansion, hoping to never to return again.

The two were now comfortably back with the team, back on the Atlas Military Base going through what they had gone through during the day. Needless to say, Blake and Weiss’s own story had seemed to beat out every other’s for excitement while the rest of RYJNROQM seemed to have some new intel on the days to come.

It had been all too much for Weiss at the end of the day, she retired to one of the empty rooms. Seeming to reflect, her mind occupied with Blake and how Blake had to deal with all of that her whole life. The Faunus’ whole life.

“Weiss?” Blake had followed her back to the empty room.

Weiss pulled herself out of her thoughts, “I’m here Blake.” she called out to her.

“Are you okay?” Blake appeared near to her.

“I honestly should ask you the same thing.”

Blake let out a small chuckle, “You know Weiss. You really proved yourself out there.”

“Blake, you don’t congratulate a fish for swimming.”

Blake let out a laugh, “All right. Well, you certainly fought your way out of the bears mouth in this case.”

“Blake. Thank you. Thank you for just being you and being patient.” Weiss held herself.

Blake approached her, giving her a long and well-needed hug. “And thank you Weiss, for defying the odds and expectations.”

Weiss released herself and wrapped her arms around Blake, deepening the hug. The two fell silent, as they hugged one another.

Finally, the two pulled away but they seemed to hold onto each other’s hands. “So, a Schnee and a Belladonna, huh?” Weiss chuckled.

“You make it sound like we’re getting married.” Blake commented, smiling down at her.

Weiss made a face, but then smiled “That definitely wouldn’t be a bad thing.”

“No. Not at all.”

Monochrome Week - Bonus Free Day

This one’s a little less shippy and a little more having fun with drawing Blake and Weiss's weapons as dinosaurs. Because I’m a dork when it comes to dinosaurs.

Gambol Shroud = Microraptor I chose Microraptor to represent Gambol Shroud for the stealth factor. Like modern-day owls, she can glide through the air without making noise, her feathers buffering most sounds caused by wind pressure against her wings. Her arm wings keep her airborne while her leg wings help her steer and change direction, favoring maneuverability over speed. Her leg wings don't actually hinder her ground movement, and actually buffers vegetation she passes through to reduce noise when sneaking up on prey. The iridescence in her feathers is also an effective nocturnal camouflage tool, breaking up her form in the night by reflecting other colors from the surrounding environment. If not that, then to bedazzle and stupefy her prey as she swoops in on them. All these adaptations make Microraptor an effective nocturnal, airborne stealth hunter. By the time you actually do realize she’s coming at you, she's already on you. Much like Blake's fighting style, especially when utilizing her shadow clones. Sources:

Although not as physically sturdy as a glyph with its fenestrated structure, the frill's spiky fringes are defensively effective as dangerous deterrents. I designed the horn and the large frill spikes to represent each type of dust that Myrtenaster is known to contain. His horn, the primary weapon in Styracosaurus, has a blue ring to represent ice, the primary dust type that Weiss uses. I gave him a bend in his horn as a symbol of imperfection, much like Weiss's eye scar and off-center ponytail. Despite this flawed weapon, he is still a graceful and skilled fencer, much like Weiss. Ceratopsians have a ball-and-socket joint between the head and neck, enabling a wide range of motion in the head that enable it to parry and riposte skillfully. A rather low and front-forward center of mass helps this multiton dinosaur to agilely lunge and recover, while also wielding a lot of weight behind a swift fleche. Source:
