Mini Angst Prompt 10
Monster character's unique eyes revealing their fear. But everyone perceives the expression as intrigue.
Someone You Can Build A Nest by John Wiswell, quotes! (either moments where I’m like, yes! A non-human character that actually feels non-human! Or moments where Shesheshen is really gay for Homily, maybe Homily also being gay lol)
An example of her not-humanness from just the summary: “Shesheshen is a shapeshifter, who happily resides as an amorphous lump at the bottom of a ruined manor. When her rest is interrupted by impolite monster hunters, she constructs a body from the remains of past meals: a metal chain for a backbone, borrowed bones for limbs and a bear trap as an extra mouth.”
Page numbers included at the end of a quote, in case you want tidbits from only early on. The character is written to be autistic, not autistic coded and is written by a neurodivergent author. “If we write anything like our minds, we’re unrealistic. Dear reader, I tried. I made a monster of it.” (After acknowledgments talking about masking). Also there will be body horror stuff (though the character doesn’t view it that way), because of how she shapeshifts and some stuff to do with egg laying (with her seeking consent, and, spoilers, no actual egg laying is in the book). With that out of the way, it’s quote time!
“Each year when Shesheshen hibernated, she dreamed of her childhood nest. Oh, the warmth of it. A warmth unlike anything in the adult world, soft and pliable heat keeping her and her siblings alive. In that warmth, they were fed raw life. Her father’s ribs, rich in marrow, cracking delicately in their mouths, and providing the first feast of their lives.” (Page 4)
“She opened pockets in her flesh and took in her first real breath of the season. The air was stale and frigid, making it feel as though icicles were for,omg along her innards. She shuddered, using the air to puff out her body, and emerged from the pool.” (Page 6)
“Her innards squeezed those rods and stones, aligning the, into a loose skeletal structure. A steel chain once used to bind her now made an excellent spinal column, flexible without breaking when catapults lobbed debris at her. Inside her chest, where humans put their lungs, she placed an open bear trap.” (Also page 6)
“She cursed out of multiple orifices.”(Page 8)
“As her innards churned to form an asophageal passage, she wrapped the red garment around herself, pulling the hood low to hide how little of a face she had. It was an old role. By shifting her body mass within the cloak, she gave the illusion of a lithe frame. The belled-out bottom of the cloak gave her plenty of room to hide most of her body mass.” (Page 8 as well)
“While Shesheshen had no sense of smell, her flesh tasted the rosemary, making her hide bubble up, boils rising everywhere the oil made contact. Her eyes fled deep inside her head to protect from that hideous pain.” (Page 13)
“Every spot where the rosemary oil had scaled her continued to crack and corrupt. She had to tear the skin off her own face and neck, screeching as she forcibly shed onto the floor.” (Page 14)
“Other parts of him, she kept for subtler uses. It felt good to have some kidneys and a pancreas inside her again. After she plugged them into her own innards, they reminded her body how to get its juices flowing.” (Page 17)
“She had a full skull and most of his jaw. She squeezed the bones up, forming a head-like structure, holding the bones in place with all the spare tendons available.” (Page 22)
“Don’t turn down wine in Underlook. My family brings in the best from every part of the world.” (Laurent) “I’m not an enthusiast for the offspring for grapes.”(Shesheshen page 25)
“Reflexively, she formed a few tentacles from the flesh on her neck to clutch onto her hood.” (Page 31)
“All of Catharsis Wulfrye’s blood threatened to go cold, and she hugged onto the horse for shreds of body heat. There was nothing worse than being full of cold liquids.” (Page 33)
Homily’s Description for art reasons:
“She was a stocky human woman, with a strong chin and round cheeks, tatters of girlhood still clinging to a few of her features. Her cheeks glowed deeper than the fire, and her beige skin was pleasantly pockmarked, mostly unadorned except around her eyes, where she had clusters of freckles.” …”Her unruly hair brown hair gave the impression of a bird’s nest. She dared come even closer, squatting with her powerful thighs. Either one of this woman’s could crush the life out of Shesheshen in her weakened state. Her size was equally enticing and threatening.” (Page 38).
“Thinking about the blush got more confusing with every moment. She thought about it so intensely that all the blood Shesheshen had left inside her ran to her own face, in a mirror reflex of Homily.” (Page 40) Love her mimicking a blush and making Homily think she likes her (she does).
“She strained against the quilts and sipped. It filled her entire head, from chin to purloined skull, with nutritious heat. Immediately her tissues cycled up to the pathetically thin neck that a human form forced them to have.” (Page 41)
”Shesheshen had to kill this beautifully round human woman, before she was slain herself.” (Page 42)
”Why Shesheshen didn’t want to eat her, Shesheshen decided not to consider. She was busy.” (Page 47)
“What was unusual about her? That her weight was superior to most humans?” (Page 50)
“Can we not talk about it right now?”(Homily) “Yes. I love not talking.”(Shesheshen, page 52)
“I could eat every piece of you that you don’t need to stay alive, until there is nothing but a fleshless bundle of organs and prime bones. Then I will swallow your still-sobbing self inside of my flesh, and keep you alive, and make your mouth my own. I will hunt your family down and work your jaw such that I eat them with your own mouth. Only when there is nothing left of you will I swallow you and let you weep in an oblivion of stomachs.” (Shesheshen page 59)
“She wanted to wrap more of herself around Homily. To grow large enough that this kindly fat woman could be protected inside her. To consume her, without the harm, until their motions were complimentary.” (Page 63)
“Homily would make a beautiful nest. Shesheshen’s insides churned as she imagined laying eggs in Homily’s lungs. Every breath she took would bathe them in oxygen, until they were strong enough to burrow out.” (Page 64). Usually hate egg stuff, but hey, Shesheshen is very clear in how she wants consent first.
“That way, her hand kissed Homily’s wound. The flesh dripped away from her, still pale and grey and hairless, not what most humans fancied. It’s edges linked. She squeezed it, staring, demanding that she take the shape of healing.” (Page 76). What’s more romantic than healing your girlfriend by taking off your own flesh and melding it with hers?
“Another shift, and Homily twisted and sat in front of her, the warmth of her body offering to pull all of her inside. Shesheshen thought she might like that. Being dissolved had never been so appealing.” (Page 77)
“She screamed until her artificial lungs collapsed, and then she coughed the lung tissue out and spat it into the water.” (page 83) Love all the weird stuff her body does in this book
“Shesheshen would’ve admired her girlfriend’s intelligence, if she wasn’t using that intelligence to kill her.” (Page 87) Shesheshen is the definition of a U-Haul lesbian. They aren’t even really dating yet and she’s already calling Homily her girlfriend, and later she’s calling Homily’s mom her mother-in-law, “She was going to eat her mother-in-law for the common good.” (Page 136)
“She rasped in a breath and twisted her head until it was entirely upside down, just to feel her flesh strain.” (Page 92). First thought was the mom/sister in Smile
“What is it? Do you want a reward?” That smile of his grew even more disquieting. Almost lascivious. Then came his wheezy, needy laugh. “Nobody talks to me like this,” he said. “Do you think you could threaten me a little more?” (Page 93) As a massive fan of the Hellraiser Cenobites, I was hyped
“As she went, a drove of flies followed her, buzzing to ask if she was food like the corpses. She answered by letting them land on her, and sucking them inside through her flesh.” (Page 95)
“Whose blood was she bleeding? She formed taste buds along several of her internal tissues to test the fluid. It wasn’t robust and fatty like human blood. It was overly familiar in a way blood has never been. It tasted like herself.” (Page 119) immediately after she thinks she’s grown a heart and tries to rip it out of herself
“This was all more than she deserved to know without Homily’s consent. It was accidental spying, and she had to stop it.” (Page 125) A lesson many writers and fictional men need to learn.
“Shesheshen wrapped her arms around Homily and held her to her chest for a moment, mourning the realization that she’d fallen in love with someone else’s pain.” (Page 153)
“She loosened the flesh of her fingers inside the lock, fiddling with fine bones.” (Page 161)
“So often, I don’t know what else to do other than give. It’s like I won’t exist if I don’t do something.”—Homily (page 166)
“Who would want to be you?”—Homily’s mom tells her this, goodness (page 173)
“They were light enough that they were inoffensive to pretend she was eating, while actually stuffing them into an isolated stomach that she would later discard.” (Page 174)
Later, this same page, kissing is described as “A sort of mutually failed cannibalism.”
Through the pages after 174, you learn Homily would let her sister poke and stab her so she could pretend she was slaying monsters…
“True love was a woman sinking up to her elbows in her viscera, delicately removing hooks from her rigid tissues.” (237)
“I like when you call me something.”—Shesheshen
“You want me to name you, and you don’t care what? The puddle of my girlfriend’s parts doesn’t care so long as I talk to her?”—Homily (239)
“No young woman of means has gone through her entire life without at least once surveying her opportunities and wishing for a dragon instead.”— Homily (240)
248, after eating Homily’s sister, she then makes herself look and sound like Epigram to say, “I am sorry for what I did to you.” This has got to be a trope because IT 2017 has a similar scene with Georgie, Briar Rose has a dream version of the main girl’s dead sister she talks to, and I swear I’ve seen this in other places
“The offspring’s tubular mouth poked through Shesheshen’s robe, patiently waiting for morsels of food that Shesheshen allotted to it. Most of its body was halfway inside Shesheshen herself, technically embedded in a pocket of flesh she’d carved out of her abdomen.” (280)
“Do not try to prove you are generous by letting yourself be hurt.”—Shesheshen (289)
“Most of the time Epilogue made herself sit with two legs and humanoid buttocks, although her upper torso kept devolving into a mass of boneless arms that snatched egg cakes and hunks of mutton.” (317)
“She had been so excited to see you again. Ze only hibernated for three three weeks, in the very dead of winter. I suspect ze will wind up hibernating longer as ze ages.”—Homily talking about Epilogue (318) Neos!!!
“…Shesheshen sat beside her, in the guise of a human man with more beard than face. She’d come to like beards; she could hide so many facial alterations behind one.” (Bonus chapter 3, forgot to write down page number) Love her having beards, but also, that last like is why I love masks so much. I never have to fake smile at anyone out in public again!

Pride Monsters Day 6: Allies ❤️🧡💛💚💙💜
This is a month to celebrate lgbtqia+ people and queer culture, but it didn't feel right to leave out the only three characters I have that aren't part of the community, so they're supporting all their friends from the sidelines with this special ally feature!
That's a wrap on the group identity pieces, but I do have one more extra big, extra special piece coming next week, just in time to send off pride month!
