Personal theory is that monsters' forms are somehow influenced by/drawn from the human psyche, in particular fears & the like (i.e. dragons, gators/crocodiles, natural disasters, the undead, sharks and piranhas...) - with tsundereplane coming into existence after airplanes were widespread enough for people to get a fear of flying. Doesn't really explain all the rabbits, though! (I think someone else came up with this theory first, but I can't recall who or when...)
