7- my character calming yours down
His nightmares always left him anxious and, most times, inconsolable. The first few times he had them, Essie could only watch helplessly as he turned inward and kept her at bay.
Now, things are different.
Sleep clings to the edges of her consciousness, but she's holding him close, her cheek resting atop his head. Her fingers comb gently through his mass of black curls, and she starts to hum to him quietly. Her voice, though distorted by sleep, is clear and sweet as the word of an Irish folksong fall from her lips.
This is what it is to love someone; the nightmares, the dreams, all of it. They are hers just as much as they are his.
I'll always stay.
[the last few notes of 'stormy weather'--a slow, bluesy tune--echo through the speakeasy as her voice fades out among the cigarette smoke and small talk. as soon as the band stops playing, she gives the crowd an easy smile and winks as they applaud. after the band begins playing again, esselyn steps off the small stage--if you could even call it that--and walks outside through the back.]

now she's sitting in the middle of the living room, case files surrounding her as she picks up her superior's slack. she hears luke pad out to the den to check up on her, and she only sighs.]
--Go back to bed, Lu.

[she sniffs, wiping at the blood trailing down from her nose. she has a cut above her eyebrow and a busted lip.
just another day of after school activity.]
--I hate those boys. Why are they so mean?
