BT phone home!

Original post - July 7th and July 12th (in two parts)

Part 1

"Must you fight with every utility?" - to quote the Simpsons.  The answer is no, but they insist on pissing me off so I have no choice.  Just spent the day trying to get through to BT and ask a simple question about my account.  (Why did you change my payment frequency from monthly to quarterly?)  I called around 12.00 today and was told the system was down and to call back in 4 hours.  I gave it 5 and a half to be sure and called back.  The system is still down, so I requested someone call me back when it's fixed.  I was told they can't/don't do that.  Wait a sec...a telephone company that can't call it's customers?  WTF?  I've been called by the company before and also been sent text/voice messages too.  But no, they can't call me when the computers are fixed, I have to call back tomorrow and see if it's all better then.  So I ask what if it's not fixed tomorrow, to which I am told that if it's not fixed by then that I can ask for a call back then.  Hang on...why can't I get one now, but I can tomorrow?  Anyway, I gave up at that point, as I can obviously get nothing done with the brick wall of an employee in my way.  When I call back tomorrow I am going to create hell, and ask for money off.  I'm fed up with being screwed by these companies. It's not like it's a one off either.  Every time I call a company, be it Water, Gas, Electric, Phones etc I get hit with the stupidity of bureaucracy and it drives me mad.  We are expected to accept being treated like rubbish, liars, thieves or worse we are belittled and suggested some bizarre things that I won't go into here.  Why do these companies expect us to lie down and accept being treated this way?  What happened to "the customer is always right"?  Nowadays it's "the customer is a stupid sucker, screw them for every penny they have."  And I kid you not.  Next time you pick up the phone to one of these companies, listen carefully to how you are addressed and treated.  Were you completely satisfied with the way the call was handled?  Was the problem solved with minimal fuss?  If the answer is yes...let me know who these wonderful companies are and I'll gladly switch!!

Part 2

So, I called them the following day and was told the system was still broke.  I requested a callback and this time they actually agreed to it.  ZOMG!  TWO days later they call me back, yes that's 2 days, and I tell them I signed up for a monthly direct debit payment and that they have sent me a quarterly bill which will come out of my account in advance of the quarter and that was not what I signed up for.  She ummed and ahhed and then came to a decision that it will have to be as they put it, even thought that is NOT what I signed up for, and that she would sent a note to the billing dept to call me about the matter.  Two days later and still no call.  No surprises there.  So, out of patience I went to the bank and cancelled the direct debit.  I don't have the amount they want, and I did sign up for a monthly fee, not a quarterly one, so I cancelled it.  While at the bank, I talked to the really friendly bank lady and I obviously had to explain why I was cancelling the direct debit.  She was sympathetic and said that the amount of people having the same sorts of problems had increased dramatically within the past few months.  It seems that most companies are adopting this "brick wall" mentality and that the fed up customers then all have to troop to the bank to sort out the problems as the call centres won't do it over the phone, and they are awkward, evasive and about as helpful as a chocolate teapot.  She had even had it herself on the phone, when dealing with everything from electricity to phones and everything in between.  It boggles the mind that 'customer service' has suddenly taken a sharp downhill slide.  A year ago when we moved house before we had no problems at all, now it is with almost every company we deal with.  I thought maybe it was me, or just bad luck, but it appears to be happening on a national scale.  It just shows you what state the country is in, when the consumer (the one that keeps the economy growing) is being treated like dirt and messed about.  I wonder if it is partly because so many people are in debt, plus the credit crunch etc and that they can't pay their bills, so the call centres are treating everyone like dirt because they can't pay.  Or is it just a new way of thinking in general, i.e 'screw them for every penny while they still have some' - that stinks even more.  But we shouldn't all be tarred with the same brush, and we still deserve to be treated as a valued customer and a human being, and not a criminal. So, a day later and still no callback.  They will call soon....the direct debit is due to leave the account next Wednesday and they will get a nasty surprise when it doesn't.  Maybe that will get their attention and they will call me and resolve their screw up. Anyway, moral of the story is, don't let these bastards fuck you around, stand up for your rights and don't be bullied by call centres who "read from the script".
