Montreal Storm Users Meetup
Around twenty developers met in Hopper’s Montreal office on June 19 to network, eat pizza, and discuss Storm, the real-time data-computation framework Hopper has been working with for the past six months.
Phil Laflamme, Hopper’s back-end team lead, led an open discussion introducing Storm and its benefits over Hadoop, referring to this slideshow put together by Storm creator Nathan Marz. There were many questions, much back-and-forth, and a lot of ideas bounced around, with input from Hopper founder Fred Lalonde and co-founder Sebastien Rainville.
And the war over the correct pronunciation of “tuple” continues! Should it rhyme with “octuple” or “stupid”? CEO Fred Lalonde said his research has confirmed both are acceptable, but we think the word may have the same fate as .gif (warning: cute bunny): One pronunciation must be right, but it doesn’t really matter because both are silly-sounding.
The Stormtroopers that stuck around after the presentation got a super-exclusive tour of Hopper’s data store—housed in the former cafeteria on first floor of the converted zinc factory where our office is located—and cracked open a couple of beers.
The Montreal Storm Users group will meet on the third Wednesday of every other month. Next meeting is August 21. If you’re interested in giving a talk about your Montreal company’s use of Storm, or a related topic, please start a thread on the discussion board here.
