Humans have this myth about storks bringing human babies to families by air in prices of cloth. Do elves have something like this, too?

Moonshadow elves certainly do! Our legends tell of the graceful and powerful Moon Phoenixes bringing the first Moonshadow elves to Xadia on a beam of purest moonlight. There are more recent legends of the first Moonshadow elflings to arrive in the east after some of our people traveled from the western lands before the border was drawn, and how they were shepherded to safety during a time of great crisis by the Moon Phoenixes themselves.

Moon Phoenixes are rare and powerful creatures of the Moon arcanum, and their link to the cycle of life is considered a powerful omen and a source of luck.

This is why we tell any elfling who has a close call early in life that it's a good thing a Moon Phoenix brought them to their family and blessed them with an extra bit of rebirth luck. No Moonshadow gets very much of that sort of luck, but with the way our lives can go sometimes... *carefully avoids looking at my stabby husband* it's a very handy thing to have.

Runaan the Nexus Guardian

So I was discussing Runaan’s future career with @beautifulterriblequeen yesterday and during this discussion we came up with an interesting and exciting theory. What if Runaan became the next guardian of the Moon Nexus?

I want to bring up Phoe Phoe and her rebirth. Over the last couple of weeks I’ve been trying to link her rebirth with Runaan’s return as linking the two would also symbolise Runaan’s rebirth into a new world and a new life, one not tied to the assassins. Runaan becoming the next guardian fits this perfectly and sets him on a new and very exciting path.

So how could this happen? The answer is Phoe Phoe. As many of us are aware phoenixes are very powerful and rare immortal creatures, elusive and wise due to their old age they are almost always associated with powerful leaders and sorcerers. My theory is that the Moon nexus guardian’s tenure is cyclical, ending only when Phoe Phoe dies. When Phoe Phoe passes away the guardian takes her feather and then sets out to find their successor. However, it is not they who chooses who succeeds them it is Phoe Phoe herself. 

Phoe Phoe is immortal so there is a good chance that she is THE Moon Nexus mount and familiar and that she has lived at the nexus for thousands of years. she may have even been there since its construction thousands of years ago. She, living at the very source of her magic would therefore be very particular about who is charged with guarding the source of her magic and who is to be her new owner/master. Someone with a true understanding of the nature of Moon magic and its cycles, who is driven, patient, who values life and death and someone who would be willing to die to protect her home. This is Runaan to the T. Runaan could easily have untapped potential when it comes to his magical abilities which could be awakened when the door to his life as an assassin closes forever.

So those very specific circumstances required for Phoe Phoe’s rebirth. I think the first is that she has to be at the nexus during a full moon, perhaps even a Harvest Moon as this is when the nexus’ power is at its greatest i.e. the perfect time for resurrection. The second circumstance I believe is the presence and the touch of her new guardian as they are the only one that she will respond to. Phoe Phoe senses her new master and, when the moon is at its highest she is reborn and the cycle of her life and the tenure of the new guardian begins anew. The guardian then gives her a new name. 

So what happens next? Well with Runaan as the new guardian he would have a new path to walk, one which is very different to that of an assassin. It would also mean that he and Ethari would move to the nexus and Ethari, being the craftsmen that he is would be very willing and able to not only restore the nexus to its former glory but also leave his own mark on the place through new buildings and structures. Think of all the swirlies that we’d see decorating the nexus. It would also mean that they would be closer to Rayla and the human kingdoms, thus helping to build positive relationships between these two warring races. Rayla would also have a home, a place to stay and bring her friends and Callum as she grows up and builds peace between both halves of Xadia. It also means that we’d finally see Moonshadow elves spending time at the nexus, dancing and performing the rituals that Lujanne described at the beginning of season 2. 

It might also mean Ruthari dances, new outfits and them being happy and content in their new life together.

Dragon Prince Theory

I think Phoe-Phoe is gonna need like an Eclipse or something to be reborn

Like she can only be reborn during an eclipse but it has to be done by a moon mage with a special spell

Which is why phoenixes are considered rare, someone has to be present when they die to collect their last feather so a mage can use it to preform the spell to revive them

.....think of how many phoenixes died alone knowing there was a very large chance no one would ever find their feather 😭

This gives Callum a good reason to learn the moon arcanum
