Wait so Petra was the one to get the happy ending? I’m sorry if I sound rude, I really don’t mean to, I’m just a touch confused. I mean, did Chet just go up into the woods and die alone? He was coughing up blood last time we saw him! And, I know, no more of Anthony’s toes will ever make it out, but I feel like we could’ve seen him finishing up the 1000 hours of recording space he had it just feels kind of empty I guess, without a real solid ending for all these characters...
One Petra got a happy ending, but some others died, at least one escaped with Carmen, and several others ended up in an ODAR blacksite prison.
Chet moved away into the woods to retire after being let go from his Director position, but he also never attained it and instead rose through the ranks to lead the strike team that captured a bunch of Petras.
Partridge spent the rest of his days modding Game Boy cartridges in the Blackroom, but he also never worked on the Timepiece and instead helped NACA’s space program so that America could reach the orbiting WELT satellite.
How can any character in a cyclical, non-linear, self-rewriting story like ours ever have a solid ending?
We’re sorry if elements of the ending disappointed you, but that’s the ending we picked, the one we wanted to tell. And we’re pretty satisfied with it, even if no one else is*.
(*We’ve heard from so many people who were also satisfied with the ending, we know you’re out there, I’m just making a point.)
On the subject of walk-outs, is there anything schools can do on March 14? We're just walking out for 17 minutes, so can they mark us tardy/absent for that? And what if people's folks are against them participating? Is the walkout initiated by the student simply standing up and leaving? How does that work? (Sorry about bombarding you heh)
no, that’s fine! legally, if you leave class for 17 minutes as a political protest, your school can punish you exactly as harshly, but no more than if you left class for 17 minutes without permission for any other reason - like if you just decided to get up and go get a snack. now, I say legally - multiple schools are saying they’ll punish students very harshly for any kind of protest, and there are two things that’ll stop them getting away with it:
one: families. if enough parents/guardians/family members support students’ right to speak out, schools will start to get scared of lawsuits, and they know they’ll get their asses handed to them if anyone sues because the law is clearly against them if they suspend you for a 17-minute walkout.
two: media. if you can’t get your family on-side, and your school is threatening external suspensions for walking out, raise hell with the media. see if you can get your story going viral on twitter. tweet it at the Parkland activists! call your local news channel and tell them your school is trying to silence students. just today, I saw public pressure force a Missouri school to overturn its statement where they had originally been saying students who walked out would be locked out of school.
also: yeah, a walkout starts with standing up and leaving, but it shouldn’t be one person. really push the message with your fellow students, and then coordinate timing, to the point where no one has to be the only person walking out of their classroom. solidarity is important to make people feel safe protesting and it has a bigger visual impact on fellow students and on teachers.
