Last week, UK-based artist Moonkay (the project of Jordan Barritt) shared his stunning new single “SMOTHERED”. The track spans nearly 5 minutes long and it’s truly a kaleidoscope of sound - from the rap verses to the thumping electronica. The softer vocals with the intricate electronic layers are heavily reminiscent of SBTRKT and Sampha’s collabs. “SMOTHERED” has an artfulness to it that combines both music and spoken word - the lyrics are deeply introspective and we follow Moonkay in his self reflection. The way the layers weave throughout the track will have listeners on a sonic journey.

On the track, Moonkay shares: “I wanted to create something that started angelic but slowly progressed into something far darker and sinister. I’m a huge believer in retrospective thought and self reflection, and its the kind of journey that leads to self growth but can take you to some cruel places along the way. For me this song is a backdrop for the kind of emotions I go through whenever I’m deep in self reflection.”
