APOLLO 11 - 50th ANNIVERSARY My Personal Memories. On July21, 1969 I was 12 years and 11 months old and attending a summer camp in Weld, Maine called Camp Lawroweld. One of the adults in charge was my teacher, Mr Quillin. He set up a relatively small black and white television 📺 in the lodge and, even though it was after hours, invited me and others up to the lodge. There in the main dining area we all watched as Neil Armstrong climbed down the ladder and hopped off the LEM. As he took his first step he said those immortal words; “that’s one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind.” Like other important events I remember this well. I also remember being thrilled with National Geographic Magazine photos from the moon by Apollo 11 and the remaining Apollo missions with the exception of Apollo 13 which had a human drama all it’s own.
