Inkhearted
Taehyung x reader | soulmate au, fluff
Ever since getting his first tattoo, Taehyung is outside as much as he can. Some days he just sits and watches the people that pass by, wondering what their story is. Other days, he’s out walking as much as possible, passing as many people as possible. This isn’t an unusual thing actually. Taehyung talks to many people who are doing the same as him. They compare their first tattoos, their troubled thoughts, and their hopes.
Just like him, they’re looking for their soulmates.
The rule seems to be that when a person gets their very first tattoo, that very same tattoo will appear on their soulmate. Taehyung was beyond excited on his sixteenth birthday. All he wanted was for his parents to take him to the tattoo shop. He had thought about what to get for years. Different people tried to give him different ideas and hints to make the search easier on him. But Taehyung didn’t want easy. Taehyung wanted unique.
‘Get your name and location tattooed! That way they’ll know where you are and how to find you!’
‘Or tattoo your phone number! That’ll speed it up quickly!’
But where’s the fun in that? Why would anyone want a tattoo of their own name on their body? Taehyung just shook his head at them and continued with his sketches. He wanted something he thought you’d appreciate, something you’d be proud to wear on your skin.
Now, at age twenty six, Taehyung is afraid he chose the wrong thing.
It’s a cold December night, the night before Taehyung birthday, when he decides to head out one last time before giving up this day to day hunt. He still has yet to receive his soulmate tattoo…meaning whoever it is hasn’t gone into a tattoo shop yet. Or isn’t going to.
The snow outside is flurrying down faster and faster creating a winter wonder land death tornado outside of his apartment. Taehyung stares at the window in extreme discomfort. He needs to go out one last time but there’s no point if his tattoo is hidden. He checks his watch. It’s a quarter past seven at night. The only decent place one can go at this hour and get away with wearing a t shirt is the bar.
He puts on his shoes and heads out.
At the bar he sits down at a stool and makes himself comfortable. He pushes his half empty drink back and forth between his hands, letting the glass slide on the slick bar.
“You alright there, bud?” The bartender leans down so that he’s eye level with Taehyung.
Taehyung half smiles and shrugs at the man. “Just trying to hold onto hope.”“Aren’t we all. Hey, the new girl will be in soon. She’s quite the charmer. I’m sure she’ll be able to lift your spirits. She used to do stand up comedy,” the bartender smiles and walks off to assist another customer.
“Oh yeah. A comedian is just what I need,” Taehyung mutters before taking the last couple swigs of his drink.
Taehyung watches as the kind bartender looks over at the door as you walk in. He smiles big and waves you over.
“Hey, Uncle! Thanks for hooking me up with this job. I was beginning to lose hope I’d ever land myself a decent job.”Taehyung’s ears perk up and he takes a closer look at you as you move behind the bar. You’re tying an apron around your waist while you chat to your uncle, the other bartender. Taehyung watches your mouth move as you speak and something sparks deep in his chest.
You take a hair tie between your teeth and move your arms up to push your hair back into a ponytail.
And that’s when he sees it.
His tattoo on your forearm.
Taehyung slams his hands down on the bar so hard as he stands up that his drink topples over. He knows the people around him are staring but he’s staring right at you. You stare at Taehyung with wide eyes as he moves towards you, your uncle is also staring but his body is rigid.
You take a step back when Taehyung is five feet away from you. “What the-“ He lifts his arm up and waits for your eyes to wander to his tattoo. Your brows furrow and then you look up at him.
“What the fuck, dude?”
“You have my tattoo! This was the first tattoo I got. You’re my soulmate!” He can’t hide the eagerness from his voice but he is able to hold back his urge to envelop you in his arms.
“No. You have my tattoo on your arm.”There’s a pause.
“No i got this tattoo when I was sixteen. It’s unique. There’s no other explanation. You’re my soulmate,” Taehyung’s mind is spinning faster than a garbage disposal trying to break up last nights dinner.
“Well…I also got this tattoo when I was sixteen. I tried to make it as unique as possible so my soulmate would notice it right away.”
“When’s your birthday?”
“December 30th.”
Taehyung can’t tell if his heart is racing at a million miles a second or if it’s stopped altogether. It clicks in your head what’s going on. “There’s no way…”
Taehyung nods his head and smiles. “Mine too.”
You look around the room and laugh in disbelief. “So we got the same tattoos…on the same day…and we have the same birthday?”
“Got the tattoo in the same place,” Taehyung adds. “What are the fucking odds…”
“No wonder we never received our soulmate tattoos!”
You and Taehyung move to a booth and sit down, your uncle smiling as he walks back to the bar.
“So tell me…how did you think of it? The tattoo I mean?” Taehyung takes your hands in his and rubs his thumb across your knuckles. You smile at him and look deep into his eyes.
“Now that’s a funny story. Okay it all started when…”
