The deciduous shrub Hydrangea macrophylla cultivar (mopheads) makes a long lasting contribution to the urban landscape as the flowering bracts last through the winter. The flower bracts are either pink or blue, depending on the soil pH; with an acidic soil these are bluer while alkaline soils generate pink blooms.

The Royal Horticultural Society Chelsea Show, London, provided a great opportunity to see some new cultivars of Hydrangea macrophylla (mopheads). These need a moist but well-drained soil in full sun or partial shade, ideally sheltered from cold and drying winds.
