Denouncing Free College in the Name of the Poor
"Although corporate media outlets have blasted presidential candidate Bernie Sanders for “living in an economic fantasy world,” his proposed plan for free tuition in public universities is hardly radical. To be funded by a modest financial transaction tax—0.5 percent on stock transactions and 0.1 percent on bond transactions—it’s essentially an older policy being reinstated to create revenue for a social program.
Many countries, including the UK, France, Japan, India and Taiwan, already have similar taxes and the US had one until 1966. And a number of industrialized nations, like Germany, Slovenia, the Czech Republic and the Scandinavian countries, have instituted free college tuition without evident chaotic societal breakdown.
And yet a flurry of media “experts” have rushed to denounce not only the financial tax as a means to fund college tuition, but the prospect of socialized higher education as a concept.
Oddly enough, they present their fight against free higher education as advocacy for the poor..."

Bedridden Bernie Supporter Gets His Vote
Last night, on the eve of the Missouri primary, I was phone banking and talked to a nice lady in St. Louis. I was calling to ask if her husband would be supporting Bernie and she informed me that in fact, he is a huge Bernie supporter, but he was currently in the hospital and not able to vote in the primary. She asked if I knew how to get a hold of an absentee ballot for him. After taking down her information I started calling St. Louis Bernie field offices. Even though it was late, about 9:30 PM local time, I finally got in touch with a local Bernie staff member. I explained the situation and he said he would follow up with her in the morning.
A few minutes ago I called her back to see if she had been contacted. I was pleased to hear she did get resolution on the issue. I was not however happy with the result. Apparently the Bernie staff member got in touch with the local county board of elections. He was told the husband should have requested a ballot ahead of time if he knew he was going to be in the hospital. Of course, he didn’t know for how long he’d be admitted and his wife was more concerned with his 104 degree fever and infection than anything else.
While this is frustrating there is a happy ending to this story. The man’s wife, while a long time Hillary supporter has decided to change her vote to Bernie. Her reason for doing so was twofold: first, to honor her husband’s wishes and secondly because she was simply amazed and inspired by the outpouring of caring, passion and support by us Bernie volunteers. Nearly every day phone banking I am fortunate enough to have at least one real and honest conversation with another American. Sometimes I feel it tug at my heartstrings. But after talking to this lady today I am having to wipe the tears away while typing this post. I just wanted to share this incredible and moving story with everyone. Together we can make this revolution happen!
