- from Le Petit Journal. April 26, 1931. Page 02.

"27 ORIENTALS ROUNDED UP IN GAMBLING RAID," Winnipeg Tribune. May 8, 1933. Page 3. ---- Shrug Shoulders and Line Up For Patrol Wagon Ride ---- Twenty-seven bland Orientals smiled and shrugged when they were taken for a ride by members of the morality squad, Saturday night. "Just another raid," they said to each other, or words to that effect.
They were playing an old Chinese game at 221 Alexander ave.. when Inspector "Bill" Eddie and his merry men came bursting in. Police claimed they were gambling. The Orientals did not argue. They politely lined up and filed into the patrol wagon that was waiting out- side. It took two trips to accommodate them all.
Meanwhile, Inspector Eddie marched off with most of the equipment in the place. Tables, bowls, slips of paper and other things used in the game were taken away to be used as evidence.
A crowd of more than 100 people gathered outside the alleged gambling den. They showed considerably more excitement than the Chinese who were involved in the affair.
At central police station, Kong Wing was charged with keeping a gaming house and his 26 fellow-countrymen charged with being found in such a place. All were out on bail as soon as their friends could get around with the necessary cash.
In city police court today, their cases were remanded to May 10 without plea.
[AL: Just colossal racism from the Tribune reporter...and of course from the Winnipeg police who targeted Chinese establishments for gambling and drug offences with a higher frequency than white owned establishments.]
