"Fight in Victory Square Is City's Own May Day Uprising." The Province (Vancouver). May 1, 1934. Page 1. --- Victory Square, pleasant acre of flowers and sunshine, was the scene of Vancouver's own little May Day disturbance this morning.
It all started when one of the gentlemen frequenting the square became involved in argument with another, and substantiated his contentions with a hefty swing at his adversary's head.
The latter retaliated and the fight was on. A large crowd of loiterers cheered the gladiators, disappointed, however, by their obvious lack of technique.
Nobody knows how the disagreement started. Red letters painted on the Cenotaph during the night asking "We died for what?" and "Fight war, Fascism," may have been a clue to the secret. Civic employees were busy erasing the lettering when the argument concluded.
