“I had never given much thought to how I would die, but dying in the place of someone I love doesn't seem like such a bad way to go.”
Monika: There goes Giffany!
Monika: 💚💖❤💗💞💕💗💝💘❣✨✨💕💞❣❣💓
Natsuki: How the FUCK did you make that sound with your mouth?!
Belost was silent as the troop transport made its way through the planet’s atmosphere. He had been the entire way.
“Five minutes until touchdown, recruits! Be ready to go!”
“Have you heard anything about what the training’s supposed to be like?”
“If it’s anything like pre-track then probably just a bunch of running.”
“A friend of mine mentioned we get to blow some shit up.”
“That’s fucking awesome.”
“Hope the food here is good. You guys remember the stuff in basic?”
“I don’t know, I heard trackers don’t get to eat much.”
“I heard this planet’s a real bastard.”
“Yeah. My CO told me this place used to be a prison world until too many prisoners died off.”
“What killed them?”
“Heat, quicksand, drowning in rivers. I heard the bugs here can kill you too.”
“They weren’t in a prison?”
“No. They didn’t even have a fence up. People who ran off were just marked as dead.”
“That can’t be right.”
“That’s just what my CO told me.”
The transport shuddered beneath the recruits and dropped into place at its landing zone. Harnesses released with a click and flipped up and over their heads. They all stood and pulled out a packed duffel bag from below their seats. Each one stuffed full of uniforms, grooming kits, personal belongings, and whatever else the recruits had thought to take with them.
The back hatch of the transport lowered to the ground, giving them all a ramp to file out of. They all looked around the massive training planet. Recruits from all different branches and training ran about in lines, did pullups to screaming instructors, and forced out pushups when they couldn’t finish. It was almost dark but the air was still hot and each breath felt like a step closer to drowning. Much like the recruit’s story there were no walls whatsoever. Just earth machined flat in a massive box, tents and cheap barracks peppering here and there, and the unmistakable smell of hot food.
But there was something missing.
“Where’s the drill instructor?”
“What, did he just forget to show up?” somebody said to the laughter of the crowd around him.
“Oh you’d like that wouldn’t you, recruit?” a raspy voice from cut through the laughter from over his shoulder, making half of them jump.
They all turned and found a man standing in the middle of them all, armorless, half an ear missing, and a scowl already on his face.
“Form up recruits!”
Instincts from their basic training kicked in and they all filed into a line. It put a sinking feeling into Belost’s stomach. Realizing that the last time he’d done this he’d been back in infantry, Phenstek and the others on each side.
He didn’t have time to miss them, though. Not when their instructor was barking at them, “Second Lieutenant Tracker Sterad Dreius. Know what that name means?”
Silence.
“It means you’re statistically twenty percent less likely to be killed on your first mission out compared to somebody who’s instructor said any other name. So you’ll do well to do what I say and pay attention to any little thing I teach you. First order of business. Throw those bags back on the transport.”
The recruits all looked at one another briefly then threw their bags back onto the transport. He pounded the side with his fist and the ramp began to raise.
“Lesson one. Carry as little as possible.”
He walked down the line briefly before catching a look at Belost and stopping.
“Well what do you know? I go through all the trouble of pulling your sorry ass out of Torrik, give you a second chance, and this is what you do with it? Unbelievable.” He moved further down the line, shouting an insult over somebody else’s posture, threatening another for not looking at him.
When the pecking order was firmly established he had them all turn around and stepped out in front of them.
A few groups of soldiers were being run in towards the barracks labeled ‘Mess’.
“Looks like you all came in about dinner time. Fall in and follow me.”
He began to jog over towards the mess hall, the recruits all following in behind him. They drew closer, the smell bold and clear. Then close enough that they could see the bolts on the barracks wall. And then passed the entrance. And in the opposite direction of the other soldiers towards the treeline.
“Lesson two! Say goodbye to food,” he shouted over his shoulder and then increased his pace. The recruits shared nervous glances but followed along still even as Sterad broke through the treeline.
Some of the last ones in line got a final view of the base. As simple and bare bones as it was, they all wished to see it again at one point or another. And they would. Nine months later when they reemerged halved in number and unrecognizable.
