Mary's Redemption - My version of the ending to Reign S2

(Disclaimer: This is my own idea. I promise I haven’t stolen it or read any fanfics. I just wanted to see more of a redemptive arc for Mary that was missing in the finale.)

Prologue - Following episode 18 when Francis wakes up and Mary decides to stay…

Mary realizes her poor judgment in leaving France and Francis, as well as putting Condé’s life in danger. She breaks off her affair with Condé once and for all, begging him to leave France, for his own safety. Their affair is the worst kept secret at court. Francis has promised to protect them but even he can’t protect them from the nobles nor Narcisse’s revenge if he discovers it. He still holds a grudge against her for the murder of his son and heir.

Condé doesn’t want to leave her with Francis, believing he is the better match for Mary and a better king for France. This country would be better off without the Valois line. He rallies support from the dissatisfied Protestants and Queen Elizabeth. He tells her ambassador that he will marry her and offer her the crown of France. However, unbeknownst to the ambassador, his true intentions are to overthrow the Valois and wed Mary. In his eyes, he becomes the true hero Mary needs him to be.

He uses the captured son of General Renaude as leverage to blackmail him to his side. Narcisse learns of his plans and confronts him believing that Francis needs to be replaced. However, Narcisse plans to install Catherine as regent and do away with Condé after he helps him with the coup. So Condé, Renaude, and Narcisse form a temporary alliance, to rid themselves of Francis, but each has his own agenda and army once it’s done.

As plans move forward, Condé’s lieutenants make frequent visits to Madam Greer’s for companionship and camaraderie. This is where Greer learns of the plans and passes the intelligence to Lola & Kenna who make sure to tell Mary. Mary learns that Condé plans to kidnap the king during one of his regular hunting parties, making it appear as a peasant uprising. Then, take the castle as they are unaware of the coup until it’s too late.

Mary is shocked at the boldness of this plan and must act quickly to save Francis and his family. She chooses to confront Condé and offer herself instead and leave France so Francis and his family will be spared. Condé considers her offer but Narcisse wants her head for all the death and destruction for which he blames her. While they argue, Renaude sends word to the castle through Greer that the Queen is being held. Francis wastes no time in mustering his army to go and rescue Mary. Bash leads a small group of mercenaries to sneak into the castle where she’s being held and open the gates while Francis, with Leith by his side, at the head of the army, create a diversion with a frontal assault.

As swords clash and men die, Mary prays for Francis. She’s wronged him and only wanted to save him. She’s torn between wanting to see him safe and hoping to never see his anger toward her again. She thought she could convince Condé to take her to Scotland, but she couldn’t know how determined he was to rule France. Now, she’ll be happy to just see Francis alive. After many hours of battle, her chamber door bursts open to reveal Francis there to rescue her, sword bloodied, face strained with worry. She hesitates, he speaks her name, “Mary,” in that same gentle voice. Now she knows she’s safe with him. They embrace. Bash and Leith are close behind. They haven’t found Condé. He’s escaped. But they’ve rescued the Queen. That’s all that matters at the moment.

As they arrive safely back at court, Francis issues the death warrant for all the traitors, especially Condé. Narcisse is thrown in the dungeon to await his execution the next morning. Renaude is pardoned for his role in alerting the King. He and Kenna retire to her chambers to embrace.

And then, Mary and Francis, finally retire to their chambers for a much needed reunion. “I will love you for the rest of my life. And I will never let you go again.”

We are definitely getting short changed here. We have been trying so hard to get to every trope possible and they don’t even mention my secret pregnancy! What about the contrived stupidity trope? We rock that. And we should totally get bonus points for having a love triangle within a family.
