Okay so, maybe this will be a big question, but after season 3 especially villanelle background episode and the fact she doesn't want to kill anymore, I feel like it formed a question "Is she really a psycopath or the circumstances make her like this?" and I would love to read your opinion about it.

[your disclaimer that i don’t claim to be an expert on psychopathy/ASPD though i have read a lot of research, and that psychology writ large is a deeply flawed and complicated field despite me signing my entire life and career over to it]

TLDR: killing eve, like pretty much every tv show in the entire world, reduced “psychopathy” to a set of media tropes and tried clumsily to do a “nature versus nurture” conflict that, in my opinion, fell flat. in this post: me bagging on psychologists from the 40s, overanalysis of pre-eve villanelle, and quotes from my reluctantly-owned copy of the DSM-5.

the fundamental assertion of villanelle as psychopath has never sat right with me. she certainly exhibits many of the traits that would be considered within the “dark triad” (yes, it’s really called that, i hate psych scholarship), and she technically meets the criteria for ASPD, but she violates many of the core tenets of “psychopathy” as it’s currently understood. she is, of course, a fictional character and therefore a creation of people who were working off of popular tropes of psychopathy. but i’m going to overanalyze her anyway and YOU CAN’T STOP ME.

(an aside: you can’t be diagnosed with psychopathy, you get diagnosed with antisocial personality disorder or ASPD, and the criteria are influenced by the paradigmatic text of psychopathy scholarship written by legendary homophobe and freudian disaster hervey m. cleckley in the 40s. literally, i’ve read this guy’s book, and it’s 500 pages of absolute wildness. further, the whole section on personality disorders in the DSM is highly controversial and by a lot of beliefs, mostly useless.)

(another aside: that dude they brought in for s2 to give a presentation on psychopathy said literally nothing correct. while you are free to disagree with my opinions, do NOT use that as a refutation!!!)

if we take the diagnostic criteria as at face value, one of the commonalities of those with ASPD who act criminally is that they will typically do so in absence of any significant external reward. villanelle’s first kill (to our knowledge, besides whoever might have died in the fire she set at the orphanage) was anna’s husband..and y’all, villanelle was sixteen and having sex with an adult teacher. you really think anna had no part to play in all that? anyway, after that, villanelle has very CLEAR external rewards for criminality--she’s literally bankrolled by murder. so her criminal behavior in connection to the twelve isn’t necessarily evidence of psychopathy.

“impulsivity and failure to plan ahead” is another important criteria, which villanelle does NOT show at all--we see her obsessively planning, adjusting and readjusting on a dime, learning skills and languages to do her job, etc. “reckless disregard for safety of self or others” also doesn’t really describe her--before she meets eve, she actually has pretty admirable self control (we don’t see her drink or use drugs to excess except in connection with eve, she has a very strong sense of self-preservation). “consistent irresponsibility” also isn’t quite there--though she goes off the rails (again after meeting eve), she’s shown to be relied on by the twelve to get her jobs done and done well.

however, villanelle also isn’t just a product of her circumstances. she’s shown a predilection for violence from a young age, but having a terrible mother and growing up in an orphanage after being abandoned isn’t prescriptive of becoming a career criminal. she has trauma in spades and that certainly contributes to the choices that she makes, but it feels completely reductive to her intelligence and character to just say “the circumstances made her do it.” which is why i found the shift in season 3 pretty jarring, and it didn’t make a lot of sense to me.

my preferred interpretation of villanelle is that she’s a hot evil lady who is assumed by some to be an emotionless killing machine and to others as a pathetic victim of circumstance, and who is actually neither of those things. she knows how to play both parts, and she does it to her advantage. she loves deeply, shows it in the most fucked-up ways imaginable, is traumatized and anxious, and also incredibly intelligent and motivated.

That's such a fun question and a fun thing to speculate about for season 2!

So obviously we're all wondering if the reason they split is because Leah is going to tell the group what she knows about Nora. Although we don’t know for sure that there’s going to be two groups (maybe the writers just mean that Nora won’t be on the island, for example), or that a split would necessarily be related to the Leah VS Nora beef. Still, a few thoughts:

1) SOMEONE IS IN EXILE. As in: it's not a group split so much as one person gets cast out - maybe temporarily? maybe permanently? The obvious candidates are 1) Nora, if the group believes Leah ; 2) Leah, if the group doesn't believe her. Not sure how likely that would be, but it would definitely provide us with some fun material, not only because we'd get to follow one character on her own, but also because we would get all the other characters' reactions. Who was in favor of the exile, who was outvoted? Who is secretly meeting with the exiled character like some sort of romance novel protagonist? (Fatin, I'm looking at you directly.) Who is leaving food or resources in the woods for them, unbeknown to the group? (Martha? Rachel? Dot?) The possibilities for group conflict and dramatic reunions are ENDLESS.

2) AN EVEN SPLIT. The group actually splits in even halves, because of an irreconcilable difference of opinions. If this follows Leah's revelations re:Nora, I'm thinking:

- Fatin follows Leah, Dot follows Fatin. Fatin is Leah's closest ally on the island, the one person who's been listening to her suspicions, and I can't see Fatin NOT taking Leah's side in an argument. Even if she's not completely convinced that Leah is Right, she's too loyal, and she'd want to take care of Leah. I don't think Dot would be convinced without hard evidence (the pit might not be enough), but I think she likes Fatin the most, and she'd feel obligated to join them so Fatin and Leah don't, like, die on their own. Could lead to Dot feeling resentful/angry that the group split in the first place, which would be an interesting direction for her.

- Under normal circumstances, Rachel at the end of season one would for sure take Nora's side. But Rachel suffering from accidental amputation might not be in a state to make any decision, or might make a drastically different choice than what we expect? I’m leaning towards Nora, but who knows?

- Toni, Martha and Shelby are smack in the middle, and I think this trio is going to get split up in the event of a disagreement. Of the three, Toni is definitely the most suspicious, so I could see her siding with Leah, even though so far she has shown zero interest in any of Leah's conspiracy theories. On the other hand, Toni is loyal, and Shelby has been a target of Leah's outbursts. I can see a scenario where Shelby doesn't believe Leah (the little girl who cried wolf...) and Toni stands with Shelby. As for Martha, she hates conflict, so I'd tentatively put her in the Nora camp?

- An interesting split, imo, would be: Fatin, Dot, Leah, Toni VS Nora, Rachel, Shelby, Martha. OR switch Toni and Rachel, for an even spicier sisterly divide.

3) FULL DISPERSAL. What if the group doesn't split in two neat halves, but in many different trios or duos? What if whatever happens completely shatters the Unsinkable Eight? Now I'm imagining each original duo claiming a little piece of island to themselves and trying to survive on their own, and there'd be a whole system of trade or alliances... Fatin claims the waterfall for her and Leah, but she allows Dot and Shelby access, in exchange for goat meat or something, etc. That would just be the girls playing a real-life version of Risk. Which: fascinating to ponder over, but a bit unrealistic, unmanageable., production wise.

Ok I’ll stop there, this already got way too long. So many fun possibilities!

2. lol I might get yelled at by the fandom for this but I really want to write a leatin fic where they don't get together because while I do love them together, they've been through a LOT. Like maybe they try and it works for a while, or they date on and off, but ultimately doesn't work out because at the end of the day i ship leah x happiness and fatin x happiness

for leatin I have, a bunker reunion fic Im working on now, post island famous leatin where they almost date but then bad things happen and everything gets messy

one night I just came up with some really random angst leatin ideas for no reason including au where gretchen causes leah to lose her memory of the island and therefore fatin, au where gretchen convinces leah that fatin (or all of the others) are dead and she loses it, and all the other girls are being held at another bunker, and a post island where leah cant deal with anything so she just leaves and drops off the face of the earth and fatin tries to track her down

I just think about the unsinkable eight all the time so like,,, ideas often just come into my head like when I'm doing normal life stuff

like ill never write it but once I thought of a leatin drivers license au, au where Fatin is famous and Leah is her new pr representative, also a highly specific au (that I wont name because @blinkaftermidnight might get mad at me) that I might bully her into writing
