God’s Messed Up Sense of Humor
They say that God doesn’t give you more than you can handle. Well, God has clearly overestimated my threshold.
First, he gave me a cold and cough on Sunday, January 29th. I remember because it came on like a thunderstorm on Lake Erie. In other words, out of nowhere with no warning.
Then, four days later, on Wednesday, February 1st, I lost my voice. And here I am, a week later, and I still have the cough and congestion and no voice. (I am actually starting to think my husband made a deal with the devil and that this has nothing to do with God at all.)
Then, on Sunday, SUPER BOWL SUNDAY!, I got my period. Yep, let’s toss cramps and no tampons in the middle of a super bowl party at someone else’s house onto the list.
Then, on Monday, I get a notice in the mail that our accountant underestimated our taxes last year and we owe several thousand more, effective immediately or the IRS will take out a lien.
Then, last night, as I am paying bills and writing a check to the IRS, my crown comes out. Yep, big old gap/hole in the bottom row of my teeth. Super great look if you like that toothless, banjo-strumming, Appalachian kind of look.
By that point all I could do was laugh. Are you freaking kidding me? Sick, exhausted, no sleep from coughing and a toddler with a cough, period, hit with huge financial bill (when I am already freaking out about money and clients), then I lose my crown on my tooth.
I mean, seriously? What the F?
Normally, that would be cause for saying screw it and eating everything in sight. But it didn’t trigger me that way. Instead, I realized that neither food nor alcohol would change the circumstances.
In fact, they would add to the burden. And in the case of alcohol, who knows what other shit storm it could bring on!
So I just sat back and laughed at the ridiculousness of it all. I went downstairs and told my husband, who simply said, “Well, I still love you.”
I talked to my sponsor this morning, who said, “What? Well, this to shall pass.”
I did a long 6-mile walk in the unseasonably warm, sunny afternoon and talked to my neighbor, who said, “Girl! The whole world is out of whack right now. Lord!”
And I talked to my dear friend this afternoon, who said, “You’ve stockpiled enough shit for the year. It HAS to be great from now on.”
And I realized while God may well have overestimated just how much I can take, He did other things too. He blessed me with amazing friends, a terrific husband, a sponsor in a program I desperately need, and if nothing else, a sense of humor.
