J and I finally got to Mass Effect 3 in our latest playthrough—we hadn't played for months because we had a ME2 mission we super hate, and we're playing Shepard as an Adept, which is sometimes wildly effective and sometimes painfully underpowered in ME2.
So! The beginning of ME3 always has J and me like 🥺 🥺 because we grew up near Vancouver, BC, and we're like "do you think the Reapers blew up the aquarium?! WHAT ABOUT THE BABY OCTOPUS!!!! ... oh god, the sky train is definitely gone... ahhhhh"
(I guess Vancouver housing prices after all this are about to get more reasonable...)
We did the early missions and then the Grissom Academy one, which— okay, neither of us has ever played an Adept before, and there actually is some Adept-specific dialogue that's fun. But as events happened, our Shepard basically showed up with EDI and our boyfriend Garrus amidst Many Biotic Explosions and briefly talked with Jack about pedagogy before she tells the students to hold the barrier and leave the fighting to Shep.
So all these biotic students training under Jack just see Shepard and two(2) other people take on a bunch of Cerberus assholes and an Atlas, but Garrus and EDI actually died super early and J doesn't like using medi-gel despite always playing on Insanity, so instead what the biotic students see is their teacher's friend taking down an Atlas singlehandedly with a little shooting but mostly some very big biotic explosions, leaping out of the way, using Lift on the guardians' shields before obliterating them, grabbing the half-killed remaining Cerberus in a Singularity, exploding it with Warp, and just ending up surrounded by dead bodies and broken machinery single-handedly.
There was this dialogue about how Morgan (this Shep) would have gone to Grissom Academy if it had existed when she was a young biotic, so we actually got the feeling of being this biotic terror with a heart of gold who is pretty much the exemplar of everything Jack has been trying to hammer into her students and they're just staring at Morgan like O_O
I'm not sure it would be quite as much... that if the fight hadn't gone pretty specifically the way it did, and we hadn't made the earlier choices we did, but as it was, we did get to feel like a very particular kind of hero in a very particular context.

I haven't shared a snippet in a long time. Truth is, other than the fact my muses have gone to sleep, I haven't been feeling up to writing.
Despite that, when I created my Reagan Shepard, I had intended on making her monogamous with Major Coats. As it didn't happen, I decided I would eventually create an AU where she is, but in her canon one she's married to [William] Coats and they are both romantically involved with Kaidan. A big happy family.
For a while now, I've been thinking about another alternate timeline in the same verse. "What if Reagan's identical twin sister survived instead of Reagan."
This hit me on the way home yesterday:
~~~~~~~~~
William runs his hand on the inscription inside the guitar case. He can still feel the ridges.
~~~~~~~~
Reagan jumps on her toes; she can’t contain her excitement. “Come. Come. Come. I want to show you something.”
“I’m coming.” William rubs his eyes with the back of his hands. He figures he probably only got three hours of sleep since he got home from this shift at Pat’s. He puts on his sweats and takes Ragan’s outstretched hand, intertwining their fingers. He lets her lead the way down the hallway, out the door, and down the stairs to their beat-up sky-car.
“It’s in the trunk.” She pops it open, and inside is a brand new guitar case. She’d been working high and low, doing as much overtime as she could, taking any Reds job she could.
“Rea...” William runs his hand along with the rough casing. This had been specially crafted; he recognizes Mike's handiwork.
“Open it!” Her eyes twinkle as her smile reaches her eyes.
He opens the lead, inside has an inscription ‘I woof you, Will from Reagan.’ It’s been their thing ever since Maddie has been saying it to their Plott hound-labrador Zoe.
“Happy birthday, Love!” She stands on her tiptoes, throwing her arms around his neck, and he lifts her, embracing her in a tight hug.
“I woof you, too.”
~~~~~~~~
William slams the lid close. He wants to hold on to the memory but also wants to forget. He can’t heal if he doesn’t let her -them- go. But he doesn’t want to let them go. He doesn’t want to let go of that little slice of happiness he had while it lasted. William rubs the palm of his hand against his heart; the tightness suffocates him against his tattoo. At first, it had only Maddie’s name on his chest, but now there are two; Maddie and Reagan.
William tries to swallow down the lump in his throat.
“Fuck!” His fist goes through the wall. The lamp crashes onto the floor as he sweeps everything from his desk. He yanks out the drawer and tosses it at the other end of the room. The switchblade rolls to his feet, and he picks it up. He slams it into the couch’s cushion, tearing it open, goose feathers flying everywhere, but it’s there. The small stash of red sand he’s kept all these years. He tears the pouch open and snorts it. He’ll regret his decision tomorrow, but for now, he wants to drown his sorrows.
He wipes his nose and heads for the kitchen. He doesn’t bother grabbing a whiskey glass and drinks straight from the bottle.
He could head to bed now or wait for Kaidan and Ashley to come back home to tell them the news.
He settles for waiting, sitting back on the couch and turns the television on.
It doesn’t long for Kaidan and Ashley to come back home, giggling and clinging to each other as they stumble their way through the living room, plopping down on the chair beside him.
Their happiness makes him sick. It reminds him of what he had and could have had Finch not take everything away from him. And then there had been her.
It doesn’t take long for Kaidan and Ashley to figure out something is wrong.
“Skipper? Is everything alright?”
William takes another sip of his whisky. He downs it like it’s just water. “I’m leaving for London tomorrow. I asked to be transferred, but they gave me a promotion along with it. Said it was about time I move up.”
“Will, what’s going on?” Kaidan wraps his arms around Ashley’s waist and rests his chin on her shoulder.”
“I can’t stay here anymore. I have nothing but contempt for you both. It’s not you. It’s me.”
Neither of them says anything, but Ashley’s eyebrow reaches her hairline.
William tugs at the collar of his shirt, pulling down to reveal the lettering inked above his heart.
“I don’t get it, skipper? What are you showing us?”
“I had a daughter. Finch murdered Maddie and her mother, Reagan.”
“Wait, the same Finch from Chora’s Den?” Kaidan’s brows furrow together. He was always quick to connect the dots.
“The very same. I’m not proud of how I handled that. I saw nothing but hate and anger. That is beside the point”
“And he got away with murder?” Kaidan asks in disbelief.
“The Reds got away with a lot.” William puts on his most poker game face he can manage as he thinks about how he got out Scott-free when he murdered Tyrone to protect Reagan. It’s what got him a direct invitation to ICT thanks to Anderson pulling some strings with the Alliance.
“What doe this have to do with us?” Ashley, blunt as ever.
“Reagan had a twin sister. She thought her twin died in the house fire. Then I saw her…Morgan. It was like staring at a version of Reagan. Identical, in almost every sense other than the fact she didn’t have Reagan’s tats. But she’s not her. Morgan is…was her own person.” William takes another sip of his whisky and readjusts himself to lean on his knees. “I don’t know if I was chasing old memories or if I grew to have feelings for Morgan as her own person. Whatever it is, I can’t explain it. I don’t think I want to either.”
“And now, she’s gone too,” Ashley whispers. There’s sadness in her tone.
“Seems whenever I get something good, it’s immediately pulled right from under my feet, and I’m tossed back into that darkness. While I’m happy for the both of you, I can’t stay here and wallow in my misery. I haven’t been the greatest of friends in the last year and a half, for all our sake, and for our friendship to remain, it’s better that I leave. I’m heading out for London tomorrow.”
I've been really into Mass Effect now that the legendary edition is out, so I did a little doodle of my Shepard! Her name is Morgan, and she's a Spacer, Sole Survivor Engineer!
