ROUND 1 — Match 226 of 276
Morella Usher (The Fall of the House of Usher)
Problematic because: "Shes one of the more sympathetic people connected to the Usher family, and nothing she does comes close to justifying what happens to her. But she’s still married into the Fortunato fortune, living off a family empire built on mass suffering. She sneaks out to attend an illegal, anonymous sex party hosted by her husband’s much younger brother, hides who she is, takes off her wedding ring, and is clearly tempted by him even though she’s married. Again, that’s not remotely comparable to the violence done to her afterward, but it is a bad decision and a betrayal." Propaganda: "She married into this horrible billionaire family, and I don’t think you can completely separate her from the comfort and status that came with that. She’s living in the house built by Fortunato money. She’s raising Lenore inside that world. She’s also clearly unhappy with Frederick in that quiet, suffocating way where you can see how Perry’s attention gets under her skin. Her going to the party is selfish and reckless, but it’s also painfully human. She wants to feel wanted. She wants out of being Frederick’s wife for one night, or at least wants to pretend she can step outside it. Then the punishment is so grotesquely disproportionate that it makes the whole “was she wrong?” question feel tiny next to what Frederick does to her after. I like that she gets to survive and rebuild instead of just being a cautionary tale. She’s a messy victim, which is more interesting than making her either saintly or secretly awful. She makes one very bad call, suffers horribly for reasons that have more to do with the Usher curse and Frederick’s cruelty than justice, and then ends up doing more good with the family’s money than the actual Ushers ever did."
vs. Johan Liebert (Monster)
Problematic because: "serial killer, also mentally breaks/tortures/manipulates people a lot" Propaganda: "one of the villains of all time. ultimately doesn't have that much direct page time and yet he's so memorable and his presence is so constantly felt"
Who should advance?
Morella Usher
Johan Liebert
