Hey! I'm considering Smith, and I have a few questions. I sort of hate parties (just a personal preference, I don't tend to like loud, crowded, dark places), but I would really appreciate somewhere with organized (or semi-organized) more mellow social events (something like a movie night or making cookies). Are there any houses that would fit that description? Also, what is a common reason for switching houses? I heard that 50% of people do, and that sort of scares me. Thanks so much!
Hi! This is just my opinion but I think Morrow House is a really great place if you want to have more mellow social events. We have a really great house community and so we are always doing activities together. This past year when I was living there we had multiple movie nights and tv show marathons in the living room, some organized by our House President and some not, game nights, where we battled on Wii and XBox, and occasional baking sessions, such as when on Mountain Day a bunch of people baked apple turnovers with the apples we picked. We do have organized parties for pretty much every holiday, but they tend to be lowkey and more about eating food, listening to our jukebox, and taking really cute pictures in front of our photo wall. For Morrow at least, the common reason for switching houses is simply the distance from Center Campus and lack of dining hall.

Hey! Just to add to this, I believe the statistics that Gold Key tour guides are given is that about 80% of people decide to stay in their first-year house. People change houses for many reasons, from having best friends be in a different house, to the traditional roommate problems. The way I see it, instead of being scared of not fitting into your first-year house (which is totally normal but not as common as you think), I’d be relieved to know that there are more than 30 houses on campus, so one of them is bound to fit you!
