This opulent hand screen from the early 20th century is made from real peacock feathers. It is 28 inches in diameter, and the owner who used it made a showy statement of style that was worthy of the peacock. According to ancient mythology, Juno set the eyes in the peacock tail in memory of Argus, her fatally slain watchman with a hundred eyes. The peacock is a popular motif throughout art history and often represents immortality, as it was once believed that the bird’s flesh never decayed.
